Is it risky to sell the OEM rims/tires and using all-seasons for aftermarket setup ?
Hi,
Since I am going 18" from the OEM 17", one thing that comes to my mind is to sell the OEM rims and tires, and my winter tires too, and use the best all-seasons on my new rims (like Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus). The saved money would go towards a LSD, but that's another story But I read some stuff about occasionally aftermarket rims not being strong enough and cracking easily (I even saw some scary pictures of popular aftermarket wheel cracked due to manufacturing process). If this would happen and no backup wheels would be available, it would be a mess. So, is it a good thing to keep the OEM wheels around ? Is it risky to get rid of them ? PS: I do have another car for the winter, but I also like to drive my BMW in the winter if there is not enough snow to get stuck.

I think the first thing to look at would be whether or not the all-seasons are good enough for your winters. Most people agree that if you have more than a dusting of snow on average during the winter, you're going to need dedicated winter tires. That means you could either get rid of the OEM's and pick up a set of winters in 18, or you can hang on to the OEM's and swap them for winter. Personally since you're saving for an LSD, I'd sell the OEM's, but only since you have a backup ride available. I understand you wanting to drive your BMW as much as possible, but due to my past experiences, I'd probably stick with a better vehicle if you get some powder.
