Blaupunk THA555 just went pop
I bought it second hand from the forums and decided to have it professionally fitted so it was done last Friday at a car hifi shop. All okay over the weekend and it sounded great.
Driving home from work tonight, about 20 mins into my journey and listening at about 60% volume and the sound went, followed by a slight hissy noise every few seconds then back off again. I pulled into the next service station to find the amp going Green then Red and some smoke coming out from the power supply corner of the amp. I turn it off and when back on, the same thing again. Smells not good either. Ive got the 5m wiring loom installed and the fronts are powering mids and tweets (logic 7) and the rears are powering the standard speakers. The sub output is powering the standard 6.5" subs with two sub cables, each sub going straight to the amp with a seperate wire which the installer did as well. Any ideas what could of caused that. Here are the settings the installers set it up to. Can anything there be a problem? I have no sound at all now |

If you've got smoke it's not going to be good. Either it's not been earthed properly which would cause a load resistance for the internal power supply, or the caps have decided to give up. Best bet is to disconnect it, isolate the remote and 12v then have a look inside to see what's burnt. Hopefully it's not the tracks on the pcb and it's repairable.

Don't worry mate. Like i said in my PM, its nothing to do with you. It worked fine when I got it. Just one of those things.
I'm just wondering if I've just been unlucky |

Installer has just checked all connections and tested all cables and speakers for shorts etc. Nothing wrong
Plugged the loom inputs into the outputs in the boot and standard system is working fine. Now have the decision to have the Blaupunkt fixed (cost????) or just get another amp and use the wiring loom already installed. |

Top is now off and whilst the components look okay, there is a black area with blistering on the board I assume thats the output stage.
Looks like I'll be looking for another amp |

Yeah a little bit fried there mate.... the copper has got too hot, probably caused by a dry joint. Vibration has a lot to do with it and also just being unlucky.
You could try taking the caps off and seeing what the state of the copper is and checking with a multimeter, but to be honest the time involved in doing it you would be better buying a new amp. Plus if you repaired it there would always be that doubt in the back of your mind it could go again. How old is the amp ? |

I think its a couple of years old but to me, just 3 hours in use
I've bought another now (second hand). Just waiting for it to arrive. Shop said they will wire it up for me as they can reuse the loom in the boot and its an easy job to do. It has speaker level inputs and is a JL Audio. Suppose someone might like a repair project for my old one. Ebay? |
