HPFP warranty.

Hi, for those of you who own a 335, we all know about the HPFP issues. I contacted BMW about the announced US warranty on the part being extended to 10 years. I wanted to know if Canadian cars are entitled to coverage for 10 years on the HPFP.
Wouldn't you know it, Canadian BMW 335 owners are being discrimminated against. We have the basic 4 years on the it.

Here is the body of the email that BMW sent me:

Thank you for contacting BMW Canada.

That warranty for HPFP is US Only and is not honoured in Canada as of right now. We do not have more information about this at the moment.

Sincerely,

Phil D, Customer Interaction Specialist
BMW Canada

Upon my first HPFP failure, I called BMW Canada and spoke to someone there. It was only 4000 km btw when it first went. After some negotiations, they agreed to give me 10 yrs of warranty and made a note on my VIN. When you bring your car into a dealership, they'll pull up the VIN's electronic record that comes from BMW Canada.

Hmmm....is Quebec not part of Canada? Do I need a passport to go to Montreal next week?

My SA at Brian Jessel told me in June 2010 the HPFP was under warranty in Canada for 8 years...or was it 10 years?....it was at least 8 years though.

No, the warranty is 4 years, only way to extend it as of right now is to get CPO (6 years).

No, no lemon law up here. We have to live with our mistakes. Moreover, BMW does not offer extended warranties here either. If we want extended coverage (probably not a bad idea for the 335) we have to buy from a 3rd party supplier

I sent an email to BMW AG complaining that BMW NA, being the North American distributor of BMW AG the manufacturer, is offerring different warranties to different markets. I explained that in my view, the product of a manufacturer should be warrantied for the same defects for the same length of time regardless of regional differences.
I'll see what they say about it. I think they'll pull a Toyota here, but what the heck, I like causing trouble...... My next step is to post on Youtube
BTW, it may be good if all Canadian 335 owners all bitch to BMW. We should all put some grass-roots pressure on an otherwise monolithic corporation. After all, we paid a premium price for a premium product. Yet at every step of the way, BMW will deny any warranty claim if they can!

I went through the same thing with Nissan N.A. vs Nissan Canada.

At the end of the day, they told me to go pound salt.

Isn't there a Canadian counterpart to the US NHTSA to whom Canadian owners can report their premature HPFP failure? I believe NHTSA investigation and continuing monitoring has been the reason for the US HPFP extended warranty!

Just a thought.

Exclamation HPFP Canadian Extended Warranty

Yes, I reported this today to Transport Canada. The person who I spoke to said I was the "first person in Canada to report any issues with the HPFP" and that he had not heard of any problems. I proceeded to reference each American complaint, the regulatory investigations, etc. he said it was all new to him.

I also can tell you that we are going to have a letter mailed to us by BMW Canada at some stage. The warranty has already been extended to 10 years & 200,000km, I have a copy of the internal TSB in my hands right now.

The TSB states " BMW will inform all affected owners of the above-listed models of their extended High Pressure Fuel Pump emissions warranty. This bulletin will be updated regarding the related Customer Letter once the mailing date has been confirmed."

The TSB was handed to me in confidence so I don't really want to scan and post it. It seems like I may actually have an honest SA right now and if he can fix this lemon I will be thrilled.

I called BMW Canada after getting my copy of the TSB, I didn't mention it but I did ask them if our warranty would be extended like the American warranty. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that there is no reason whatsoever to extend the warranty on the "HDP" for any BMW model because "there is no problem with that part."

Please report BMW Canada to Transport Canada, their 1800 number is not on their site, you have to call the old 1800 number for road safety and it will give you a new one to call. Call it, Transport Canada does seem very inclined to "hear more about this new problem if it is indeed as widespread as you seem to believe".

Anyone else thinking Class Action for the N54?

Yes, we are now covered. Please make a lot of noise and don't wait around for BMW to do the right thing. The only reason I even know about the warranty extension is because I am not taking a 98,000.00 hit sitting down. BMW is German for Toyota.

Please take 5 minutes to report any BMW HPFP failures to Transport Canada. I've unearthed the correct number, which is still not posted anywhere I can find.

The number is: 1-800-333-0510
-There is no wait time
-The person who answers will be an investigator
-This is a direct line for Road Safety issues caused by defective parts
-They claim to have only ever received TWO reports of HPFP failures, including my own.... ever.
