Question Is your oil catch can REALLY working?

Folks,

I've been thinking about asking all of the members here who have an OCC, regardless of the manufacturer the following:

* What is your OCC Brand?
* Is it REALLY working? Can you see oil being collected?
* How often do you drain it and how many miles do you drive in a month?

I really don't care if you like how it looks, how it fits, how well is made! I don't care about personal opinions about any product. I just want to know if yours WORKS as advertised!

P.S.:
My BSH OCC is completely 100% bone dry which makes me think that mine is probably defective. I looked inside and the mesh is only covering about 1/4 of the entire cylinder...

My OCC collects about 75 ml oil in a month during about 1000 miles driving.

My Mr. 5 catch can is working perfectly.
I drain my can every 2 oil changes ( around 15k miles) and I get about 1/8th of a cup.

I have to tell you that even though the BSH can looks nice, I've had doubts about its effectiveness when I saw how its designed inside. I took out my flash light and I tried to illuminate the internals. It looks like that the mesh that is supposed to be inside of the can does not go through the entire cross section of the can. There is just one piece about 1'4 of the length that just hangs in front of the two connectors. It acts more like a splash shield rather than an oil vapor separator. Basically you have 3/4 of the volume of the OCC where air just passes though freely.

I've been thinking about this OCC instead:

http://42draftdesigns.com/categories...catchcans.html

Notice how there are three layers of wire mesh which have the same diameter as the cylinder. You connect the tube from the valve cover to the bottom connector. As air rises through the "filter stack" oil fumes condense and drop off at the bottom. Cleaner air escapes from the top and goes back into the intake.

I hope we get more responses here soon. I am planning on taking this up with BSH.

Unfortunately, they do not have N54 kit. They specialize in VW/AUDI products.

The stealth one looks nice, but you will have make to your own bracket and find the connectors I guess.

Just to clear up a few things.

1. OCC need to allow the engine to breath. Our mesh design allows for the engine to still vent pressure while collecting oil. Over doing it with baffles and separators will hinder the engines ability to vent pressure which is the primary purpose of a PCV system. It is worthless to sacrifice overall engine health and longevity to marginally collect more blowby.

2. Heat and humidity will have MAJOR affects on the amount of blowby collected. During the summer it is extremely common for the amount collected to reduce.

3. There is a member saying the mesh only extends ¼ the way down the can, however the truth is there is only ¼ of the can not separated by mesh.

4. Not all engines are created equally. Some will be tighter from the factory allowing for less blowby. Mileage will also have a role played in this.

5. This design has proven affective in all of our other offerings using the same design.

Did you look into the bottom of the can with a flashlight or are you just checking the dipstick?

I have about 4000 miles on my BSH can and there is a decent amount of oil on the bottom, but it isn't nearly high enough to reach the dipstick yet.

I'm not saying the Riss Racing is a "perfect unit" but it did grab oil nonethless.

No disrespect to any companies but these things are extremely over-priced. Then again your not in business to break even so I understand. But sheesh.

Must be that BMW tax

Mr.5: did you make your own OCC?

True, but when I contacted them a few months ago they said they were working with a local N54 owner to make a kit.

Member 'dunkbmw' installed the 42 Draft Designs Stealth OCC on his car as shown here. I am in the process of buying a Stealth OCC from these guys, if I manage to piece together all the components I need I will post the results and the parts list on here. I PMed 'dunkbmw' but have yet to receive a response.

The whole thing should come out well under $150, which is already more than I like to spend on an OCC. This $250 OCC crap needs to stop.

I did. I was initially thinking of making something like this but as BSH mentioned above, I was worried about the engine being able to breathe with the stainless steel wool.
So, I t looks just like this except without the steel wool in this pic.

Here's the thread with more pictures of me trying to make it:
