Demonstrator
It is common knowledge that a car needs to be properly 'run-in' for best longevity of the car.
What is everyone thought about demonstrator vehicle? Are they okay to buy or something we should avoid? Obviously these cars are driven like they are stolen from day one. Who do you think?

I think it depends how cheap you can get them and how long you plan on keeping them.
Keep in mind that BMW engines are run in at the factory so its not like they arrive at the dealership with a sticker saying do not rev past 3000rpm's for the first 5,000kms or whatever it may be. If you can find a cheap demo thats optioned the way you would order then go for it. |

The manuals for both our cars suggest a gentle break-in period, avoiding 4000rpm (petrol) and 3000 rpm (diesel) for the first couple of thousand.
Not sure how important this is - but there are plenty of ill-informed internet arguments to read if you care to google I'd not worry too much if the car in question was a service loan car, dealer demonstrator or executive fleet vehicle with 2-3000km up. I do wonder what happens to the cars BMW use for their track days and would be cautious about buying certain models in this regard. Anyone know?

It wouldn't bother me, esp if it was a good discount off whatever discounted new price you would have got.
Remember when comparing demo vs new price, you need to factor in that nobody pays the list price anyway so you need to take 5-10% off the new drive away price THEN get another discount for it being a demonstrator. |

Just appraise it like you would any used vehicle.. but with the added benefit that you're getting close to full new car warranty. Just because its a demo doesn't neccessarily mean its been flogged. Some of them have probably had pretty soft lives by comparison with a lot of private sale cars out there.

I wouldn't hesitate with a demonstrator. I have own both a Z3 2.8, Mini Cooper which were ex demos. Neither gave me any problems. Now days they are built so well, that it is hard to break them. Also, not everyone will drive them like they are stolen.
Actually, my Z3 was used in one of the Melbourne GP celebrity races, back in '99. I had no problems and saved heaps. |

I would not touch a demo M , my local BMW body shop always has at least one in from the $tealership that has been damaged by sales reps that think they can drive
I think there was one Melbourne red e90 M3 that was there 3 times LOL

Not sure it makes a difference if you buy a demo that has been driven hard, or you buy a new one, and drive it hard yourself. Same end result. |
