I would like to know the added value in the BT tool compared to something like this:

the ebay scan tool is a generic obd2 scan tool and will not do any bmw specific functions. It may not even work on the bmw. I have one of them for my toyota and all it does is check codes and clear CELs. And mine wont work on an audi either....
the bt scan tool is the vagcom equivalent in the audi world |

Every reason you're buying the scan tool in the first place - seeing & clearing tuning codes, VANOS codes, anything like that. All a basic OBDII tool will tell you is basic emissions and knock codes.

Yep, there are OBDII Generic codes that go for all manufacturers and BMW specific codes that are in addition to these. I recommend the BT or Peake tool so you can read these BMW specific tools and not misdiagnose.
