Cooling, intake and ventilation
This is something I've been thinking about for a bit. We need to do whatever we can too help the engine breathe and cool the motor. This should be a definitive list of what we need to do to create a reliable track car or hard driver.
Here 's the best breathing 335 parts list. Please update the list with suggestions. Include methods of bringing in and venting air, i.e.: vented hood or air inlet modifications as ambient, hot air, in the engine compartment may be a contributor to the overheating. We are looking for best of breed so if you have knowledge of one thing is better than another please spout off. *I have installed or am getting soon Intake

Maybe old-age is getting to me...
I can't remember who it was that said to me that the problem with the N54 was the long 6 cylinder format and that it was impossible to supply adequate cooling to the last 2 cylinders via the traditional cooling method. My vague recollection was that it was an engine builder familiar with forced induction. I'd almost want to say it was Steve Dinan but that wouldn't sound right, if I got that information from him I'd remember. I also remember something that he said about a couple of cooling duct redirecting air into the last two cylinders would go a very long way to solve the heat related engine problems on the N54. Now it's going to drive me NUTS trying to remember who told me that. |

Hack, Reading a prev. post of your was part of my motivation in starting this post and I really wanna know more about how to use the considerable side grills on our cars for increase air flow. Maybe into the compartment in general or more directed at the back of the engine. |

If you look at the underside of the E46 M3 and the MZ4 Coupe, they actually have ducts cut into the reinforcement plate underneath the car to allow some air to flow up into the bottom of the engine compartment and then flow out the back of the ducts. The MZ4 Coupe also has a special little plate with multiple ducts cut into it to redirect air to the TRANSMISSION. On M cars they take the extra care to remove excess heat built-up natural in a very long block. You can see all the same "tricks" done on Porsches (the flat 6 with its compact package needs access to a lot of cool air) and if my boss EVER takes his F430 to work, I can almost guarantee that there's ample air duct directing cool air into the engine compartment too...Although the V8 block is inherently cooler.

Remove the plastic engine cover! It's there to look good and deaden the sound from clattering valves. There's insulation (sound and heat!) underneath the plastic cover.

So can a solution like the one Hack is talking about be made in the aftermarket? Sounds promising.
kenneth, isn't there a bunch of stuff under there that shouldn't be exposed? |

Wow. This died? I would say, besides learning how to drive, this is the most important aspect of making our cars track-reliable.
C'mon folks: Hack, Harold, Mr5, Andrew from AR...I can see you and I know you have something to say. |

Tests on their race car running 16-17psi show maximum oil temps of 260 under heavy use I'm told. I can't wait to try this out. this sounds like the optimum solution for our cars ![]() |

Not really, the cover is only for looks and sound deadening, plus it retains so much of the heat under it!
