Bought second-hand 335i
So I found a 2007 335i White with M-tech kit 19k kms on the odometer in Kowloon Bay. I agreed on 443k for the price and told them it is conditional on the car passing a mechanical check up.
Here come my question. They recommended me to use AA in HK to check the car and do a road test. Is this company good enough to do a check? I was going to send it to BMW but they said BMW does not do road tests ???? The main thing I am worried about is the turbos. The car looks in good shape however you never know about the motor. I turned the car on and the engine sounds fine but I have not driven it yet. I have already put a deposit down. When I get the car I plan to do an oil change, spark plug change and filter upgrade. Anyone have any recommendations on spark plugs to use? Any help would be great ... I am looking forward to picking the car up next week but don't want any problems. Thanks |

Of coz the used car dealer doesnt want you to bring the car to BMW for check up. For sure BMW will do the road test and hook up to the computer to check any problems abt the car. You should call up BMW and ask them how much do they charge for this service.

I will try and give them a call tomorrow morning and see what they say. Has anyone heard of the AA association or something like that? Are they reputable?

Don't try AA as you may find from other forums that the so-called inspection from AA is not reliable.
You should either have it checked by BMW or your reliable and trusted garage. |

AA and HKMI ain't going to be very thorough with the check, it is really inadequate if you ask me. The guys at KWB would always say AA etc cos these entities are known in HK.
First check with BMW and if you are not getting anywhere, you should go and find your own trusted car mechanic to do a thorough check for you. Preferably your mechanic should be quite familiar with BMW cars. |

443k seems a bit pricey for a 2007 year model. I could get one for less, you should have check around more before agreeing to pay for that price. As for AA or BMW, BMW is more reliable, AA is a hit or miss, sometimes they are alright, sometimes they aren't. My current 325i was checked at AA, so far no problems.

Hopefully everything will turn out ok ... I am sending the car to BMW on Monday now for a full check up. Cost around $!500 and they should know the car back to front. I will be taking the car str to a wheel and suspension shop to get the cars stance better. Maybe Tai Hang area? Hows your car going? |

Well, ok if it's an almost 2008 model, then I can understand the price a bit more. Still, if it was me, I would have gone for the manual, better to drive, hehehe.

Yeah I understand, it can be a real pain to drive manual in the stop and go traffic of the city. Which is why I have an auto in my 325i, it was too hard to find a manual here. Also, it may not be easy to sell once you are finish with the car, since 90%+ of cars in HK is auto. Still, for true driving enjoyment, nothing beats a manual.

Get a check on the car with BMW. You may think it will cost a lot but if you end up with a car with a lot of problems (i.e. crashed before, rebuilt, replaced suspension, replaced chassis etc.) you are seriously going to regret it. You don't want to pay 400k+ for a car that you can never fix.
