Turbo Dynamics wastegate upgrade - still rattling!!!
Since my wastegate rattle was becoming very annoying I decided to send a set of spare used turbos to Turbo Dynamics to have them refurbished and to upgrade the wastegates.
Here is my first thread describing the problem. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...stegate+rattle Today I picked up my car after the turbos were swapped and the rattle is still there!!! As before I can hear it only after the exhaust pipe valve is open, so in around 20 seconds after I start the car. When the valve is closed there is NO rattling. I have already sent an email to Turbo Dynamics, but you can imagine how disappointed and mad I am now. My shop says they simply changed the turbos as they always do and they say that the problem is either not with the turbos or Turbo Dynamics did something wrong with the wastegates. Do you guys have any idea what's going on here? !!! EDIT !!! I just found an email I got from Turbo Dynamics describing what they meant by the wastegate repair: With the wastegate repair we bespokely make a new bush from 316 stainless (this is the part that wears) we also modify the existing arm and valve to suit the new bush. The guys at the shop told me they do not adjust the actuator arm when they install a new set of turbos so in this case they did not do it either. |

It depends on how bad the rattle already is I guess. Mine were replaced by the shop at 18K miles, and at 23K miles, it rattle worse than a POS diesel Jetta. PROCede wont help if you are rattling like you have empty cans dragging behind the car on a rough road. I gave up and figured when I start loosing boost I will research a good upgrade option instead of getting BMW stockers. BMW really really Furbar-ed this one. A $ 50K car that sounds this POS is just unbelievable.

You guys had it done at no cost by BMW, but I paid for the wastegate repair to TD and also paid for installing the refurbished turbos, so I will not accept the fact that spent so much money and the problem is still not fixed.

Maybe the rattle isn't caused by the wastegates but by the exhaust flap in the left muffler?!
I had my left OEM muffler replaced by BMW a few weeks ago because of rattle during cold starts and acceleration. I have a 2008 E92 335i with 48.000 km. |

I have watched a few videos by Mr. 5 and my rattle sounds exactly the same, so I am pretty sure this is the wastegate rattle. Before I decided to sent my spare set of turbos to TD I asked my shop to lift up the car and tell he where the sound was coming from. They clearly said it was coming from the front of the car. |

I think your wastegates still need to be adjusted with a vacuum connected to them. So im not sure if TD has the equipment to do that. According to the bmw manual the wastegate valves should be seated tight , but also not too tight .
I think with the upgraded bushing you have , you should be fine if they were adjusted properly. This together with the procede's new autotune feature of the wastegates should give you no ratlle. I had a nasty ratlle too , adjusted the rear one a bit. Uploaded the latest maps , and im as good as ratlle free now.

So this isn't the first set that was actually rattling. This is a new set of used turbos that were refurbished?
Why didn't you just buy new set of stock turbos, since the new ones have the upgraded waste-gate assembly. They are only 600 bux at Tischer? Mike |

They did some basic overhaul and fixed the wastegates. I know I should have bought a new set, but I did not |

Search for a thread by MR.5 , in there its explained how they should be adjusted to factory spec.
Even with new actuators , if they are adjusted too loose , they will still ratlle. They need the correct tension against their seating. With the turbo's mounted , you can reach for the rear wastegate. The front is impossible while mounted on the engine, that turbo will have to come off again if you want it adjusted.

Also my shop said they never adjusted an actuator arm when they were installing brand new turbos. I thought TD set everything to the factory spec. I should hear from them tomorrow and I am really interested to hear what they will say. Is there any way to check which turbo is rattling? Also in the Mr. 5's thread I could only see the instruction on how to adjust the actuator arm but nothing about the factory spec. |

According to the manual you should put a certain amount of vacuum on the wastegates. With this vacuum aplied to the wastegates you should still be able to turn around the wastegate in its seated position . So it should be adjusted so that it sits tight , but still is able to turn around in its closed position. In Mr5's thread he gives details on the amount of vacuum and there are pictures of the manual on how to set them.
Il see if i can find it for you. Quote:
