Question Where is the N56?

So I've been thinking about the BMW engine nomenclature and it seems to me that they left a gap purposefully:

N52 but no N53. Probably reserved it for future I-6 non-turbo engines for base models

N54, N55 but no N56.

N57 - diesels begin...

So I am wondering what the N56 will be? Will it be a reserved number for future turbo engines that are not part of the M line of cars?

Discuss...

Single-turbo straight twelve with variable intake diameter and a gigantic kazoo for a muffler.

+1 Great engine!

N56 will probably be the successor of the N55, let's see. Maybe there will never be a N56. Future will tell.

From the N53 Wikipedia article:

Quote:
It is an improvement on the N52 Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine mainly since it has gasoline direct injection technology and can burn stratified
... BMW does not plan to put the N53 engine for sale in Australian and North American models due to the high sulphur content of the fuel available in these markets.
Wouldn't the same concern be valid for the N54/N55?

My guess is that the higher sulfur levels foul the catalysts used by the euro spec N53 cars. The US actually has much more stringent NOx emissions limits than Europe, which is why it's been difficult for European diesels to make it to the US. (Catalysts convert NO2/NO, referred to as NOx, to N2 and O2)

The N53 likely produces more NOx than the N54/55 due to a higher compression ratio and the stratified charge technology. This would require different catalysts that may be more sensitive to sulfur fouling.

It sounds like maybe they've developed a solution since newer cars seem to have the N53.
