330bhp * .85 = 280whp stock?
280whp / .85 = 330bhp stock?

But Dinan says in the same document:

The drive train loss has been a major point of contention among tuners and the numbers have fluctuated from 10% to over 17%. What most tuners do not seem to recognize is that drive train loss is not a constant factor; it is determined by the frictional losses throughout the engine and drive train that differs throughout the entire rev range. As the car goes faster (MPH increase on the speedometer) the gears, bearings and seals are moving at a higher speed and friction increases.

Thought the same thing, but overstating the efficiency of the engine would understate the effectiveness of their tune. So I don’t see any reason for them to intentionally bias the numbers.

Seem like 15% is a good estimate since the 335i is rated at 330bhp and Dynos at 280whp.

what does a 12% driveline loss have to do with the HP rating? Dinan is claiming 12%.

There is no real uniformity with drivetrain loss. It will literally vary from dyno to dyno (chassis dynos), no matter if they are similar makes or models. We see stock numbers in the 265-275whp range depending on mostly on mileage. Using the same logic for those numbers would only yield 311bhp stock.
