F****** dealers (long)
So I go by my dealer to have them look at some indentations in my horn cover on the steering wheel. The car is 3 weeks old with 900 miles, Sonora 335 sedan. The car has not one scratch and was detailed by me 3 days prior. I had driven about 100 miles since detail. The sales manager and I are talking about the car etc. and I mention that I detailed it for the first time last weekend and so what does he do? He walks the length of my car DRAGGING HIS FINGERNAILS ON THE PAINT and then says"Thats how you can tell if a car was just waxed"! I said It wax waxed days ago not TODAY..Anyway the car has serious scratches. The sales Mgr felt bad and said I will have an outside guy he knows and trusts do a full detail. Well I reluctantly agreed and I picked up the car tonight. What a stupid mistake. I forgot all of you guys good advice about dealers. I have more scratches than ever in a 3 week old car. I am beside myself and am ready to require that the trunk and hood be re-clear coated. I will take pics of all of the scratches tomorrow and post them. None are through the clear but all are into the clearcoat. Any advice is helpful

Can you guys recommend a great detailer in Ft Myers/Naples area. At this point I think the dealer will do whatever necessary to solve the issue. This is our 5th BMW from them. Thanks again for the help

listen to the master
dealership 'detailers' are just your minimum wage earning punks that don't give a shit about your car (I know I'm making a gross generalization, but I've seen dealership's so-called detailer/car washer/lunch-getter) Quote:

he dragged his fingernails on your car, why, what buisness was it of his to test if your car had been waxed recently anyway, and even if it was hes not going to get any wax under his fingernail from doing that

OMG!! that is ridiculous!
i've made the same mistake as you did. i brought my car for some body work to the dealer and it must have been the worst job i've ever seen. i had to go to a different body shop to fix my dealership's mistakes. if this is such a common problem, i don't understand why BMWNA doesn't do anything about it. if they had a good reputation (detailing and body shop) they could possibly make assloads of money on it. i don't get it.

OMG! Scratches on a Sonora?! For scratches to show on this color then they really messed up your car.
Follow picus's advise ASAP and let the dealer pay for it. The Sales Manager was that stupid to run his fingernails on the paint? Why didn't he just use his keys !! Get a Sharpie and write "IDIOT" on his forehead. -

I also think you should get it done at a shop you trust and send the bill to the dealer. I might even be tempted to file a complaint with BMWNA.

Update
I took the car to the best body shop in the area that has worked on previous cars of mine. He looked at it and said they could lightly wet sand all of the areas and remove the scratches. He said the new German clear coats are sometimes tough to polish out when you have sharp or deep scratches but these do not go through the clear. They are VERY visible under artificial lighting but not so much in sunlight I think do to the color of the car. I have read and heard from others that the BMW clearcoats are fairly thick and he was not concerned about harming the finish or thickness of the remaining clear. If they can be wet sanded and I do not have to re-clear it would be preferable. Of course the dealer will be paying and providing a demo for the day. What do you guys think?

PICUS,
Thanks for your advice and your well informed opinions. I will meet with the dealer tomorrow and see where we go. I was concerned about sanding on a 3 week old car but as I have read wet sanding with 3000 plus paper is not a big deal as long as the person doing it is not aggressive. My only other concern is that in the scratch areas it may look different (smoother with NO orange peel) after sanding. I guess if they know how to do it I will be OK? Opinions? Sorry for being a wimp but I ordered this car, waited 10 weeks and here we are with this BS. However, I do not want to trash the dealership because they have been very good historically and have always taken good care of my cars. This was a mistake by an individual and he accepted full responsibility. If in fact they do not live up to any promise, I assure you they will be thrashed by me on this board. I am giving them the opportunity to correct the problem and learn HOW to treat a new BMW! |

3000 grit used lightly will not effect the orange peel at all; to reduce orange peel you need to sand rather aggressively with a lower grit to smooth out all the low valleys in the paint. I can not vouch for the body shop guys work, but if he knows what he is doing he will sand with 2000-3000 grit, then polish those marks out with a rotary. There are three things I will caution you to look for when you receive the car.
1) Make sure the scratches are gone, obviously. 2) Try to go on a sunny day, see if you can catch the car in the sun to see if there are rotary holograms. (If you dont know what those are I will link you). 3) I would specifically have them *not* seal/wax the car or glaze it, so that you can accurately evaluate it's condition. Wax it yourself. Cheers. |

Picus,
Thanks for the support. I already asked that the car not be waxed glazed etc...But I think you need a trip to Sunny SW FLorida to handle this situation!! Isn't it cold in Canada now? I wish you were here to deal with this because I admire your commitment and desire to do it right. Most don't have that! ![]() |
