RFT's in winter
Has anybody with the sport package 162's used their factory run flats during the winter? I just bought this car and I find it hard to believe that the sport package for the xi does not come with "sport" springs so that the car has more ground clearance for snow, but comes with summer tires anyway.

I thought the sport package wasn't available on xi cars? That's why I don't have sport package...I have every option from the factory in my car. Maybe it just wasn't available when I got my car...05/06 build.
I wouldn't drive on summer tires during the winter. Either swap them out for all seasons or snows or better yet get some wheels for the summer/spring and get another set dedicated for winter with snows. I have my stock 159 style wheels with OEM all seasons for the winter and a set of Breyton GTS Race wheels with summer tires. |

The xi's do have the sport package as an available option. It offers a different steering wheel, paddle shifters for automatic, sport seats, shadowline trim and often different wheels depending on year.
I would absolutely not run summer tires (which come standard with 18" factory sport package wheels because all season runflats are not available in the OEM tire sizes) even with xi...you'll be sliding everywhere |

Check out tirerack...they tend to have inexpensive options.
Or check the F/S section here...you can easily get away with all season tires on an xi in winter |

Tirerack's cheapest "fitting" option is $1,136.00. Anyone have any 17" wheels they want to get rid of that would fit?

OP, if you keep an eye out in the wheels/tires For Sale section, you can find a good deal on a set of used wheels with winters mounted ready to be put on your car. I can vouch for using all-season tires in the winter....no problems in Philly, North Jersey, or NYC. However, stopping in snow is unpredictable....with any tires, snow or all-season. Just keep your distance. |

I've got the cold weather package as well. I'm gonna keep my eyes open in the classifieds.

I would look at Pirelli SottoZero winter tires. They make the right sizing for the 18 inch sport tires that are runflats. Generally they will be cheaper than an entire new set of wheels/tires as well.

to the OP: fdriller has good advice - just hop on the forum every couple days and watch the for sale wheel/tire section, you'll see a set of OEM 17"s go up for sale a couple of times a week. Also like fdriller said, I have had no problems with all seasons coupled with the xdrive - even in last years record snow fall, the xdrive is solid. I would just keep watching for a style of rims you like (OEM or aftermarket), a size that makes sense (probably 18" or under) with a decent set of rubber on them (RFT versus non RFT and all season versus snow) and that hits the price point you are looking for. You should certainly be able to snag a set of 17" OEM rims with allseasons and TPMS for around a grand, maybe less depending on tread remaining on the tires. So just keep an eye out and pull the trigger closer to the winter time. Last edited by R12ax7; 09-17-2010 at 10:39 AM.. |

Also for winter driving, narrower wheels/tires handle better than wide (think ice skate blades and skis); but winter tires make the most difference.
If I were getting new winter wheels, I'd give these 17x7.5" a try: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...w=7.5&fcb=Drag Last edited by Sinister Stairs; 09-17-2010 at 11:07 AM.. |

I have Sport package on the xi (which gets you the oil cooler and style 162 wheels), along with cold weather. So it can be done. |

I run 162's in the summer and snows on 16" stock 159's in the winter.
Having 2 sets is great. No re-mounting. I just jack the car and put 'em on. XI with snows is a tank. |
