I have a march 2009 build e90 with the red clown nose on the rearview mirror. My dealer says it is not prewired for an alarm but then why does it have the red clown nose???

I don't think 2009 are pre-wired for the alarm anymore. My guess is they just used the "standard" mirror which includes the clown nose. That said, I'm surprised they couldn't run the wires needed for the alarm somehow...

Even though your car (09') is no longer prewired, the clown nose is still on the mirror - if you do not have the Auto Dimming Rearview Mirror option - you would twist the clown nose to get the mirror to tilt so as to reduce glare from brite headlights behind. In the old days the mirror would be tilted by a lever...
