Help before I take it to the dealer!

So I suspect it's a fuel problem of some sort but when I start the car up on a cold start the car immediately goes into a hard limp mode (sounds like it's running off only a few cylinders) like the timing is off and then dumps white smoke (pure gasoline smell) for about 2-3 min.

I usually shut the car off and restart a few times and the problem seems to go away after a little while. Then the car runs perfectly fine once the engine is warmed up until the next cold start, where it repeats itself all over again.

I'm really hoping it's nothing major but wanted to see if any of you guys had an idea of what it could be before I begin the process of stripping my engine mods off and taking it to the dealer for service.

Thanks in advance.

Everything short of a turbo swap. JB3, downpipes, HELIX FMIC, DCI, Charge pipe BOV, fully catless to Eisenmann mufflers. JB3 has been off the car for a month, problem still persists.

Bad fuel injector. Had the same problem last year. Fuel is leaking into cylinder overnight and causes rough cold start. The car returns to normal after the excessive fuel is burned.

Love this forum. I suspected it was a bad injector but wanted the opinions of everyone here before I go out of my way to return my car to stock.

Thank you.

Also, how hard is it to replace the injector? Would a code reader tell me which cylinder is misfiring?

With the mods you have you have two options:

1. trouble shot it at a local BMW specific shop

2. bring it to the dealer with a suitcase full of money.....leave the suitcase full of money on the front seat.

seriously, with the mods you have the dealer is probably going to void your warranty to trouble shoot the real issue.

I would never bring my car in for service with an engine full of aftermarket parts. I've been in this game way too long to do something like that. It's why in 15 years of driving tuned cars I've never once had my warranty voided. I take all precautions before resorting to dealer servicing. I'd rather spend a little money returning my car back to stock than a lot of money paying for a repair not covered under my warranty.

Replacing the injector isn't too hard. The trouble comes from the coding of the injector which, at this point, only the dealer can do.

Thank you Scalbert. So do you suggest I do this job with the dealership after all?

At this time, it may be your only choice. Each injector has a code on it which needs to be entered into the DME; it is the calibration informatiion. BavTech is working on it but have not added to the interface yet and it isn't expected for a couple of months.

Thank you scalbert. I guess I'll begin the process of putting the cars engine mods back to stock. Tune is already off but will probably remove the downpipes and intake and just limp her into the dealership from there.

I agree totally. I just hate to see you got to all that trouble of taking off the parts and then putting them back on.

No other shop has the tool(s) a BMW dealer has to read the injector? I know they are expensive, but I did not think they were exclusive.

A good indy shop will have the right equipment to do this. I'd make a few calls to find someone other than a dealer who is capable, if your confident in what's causing the problem.

Word is that even the GT1 cannot code injectors...

Just wanted to update that I received my car back this morning. It was indeed the fuel injectors just as you all diagnosed it to be. So thanks to everyone!

Car is running fantastic once more. Thank you to Craig, also.

Except for the tune, everything else was still on the car. I was lucky to have a guy working on the inside that looked the other way. My last resort was to return the car back to stock which I would of had no problem doing.

Sure it would of cost me a few hundred but it would of been worth it not having to pay for parts and labor and voiding a perfectly good warranty.

Mote, do you know which codes you threw? Before it threw SES light, did you feel the loose in power/boost??
