Intercooler - Active Autoworks vs. AMS

2007 E90 335i Sedan:

I currently have aFe Dual Cone intake and the JB3 tune....looking to add Intercooler for more airflow, lower temperatures and more performance...in my research, I have found these two to be the top two, but wanted input from the forums...please include all opinons/dynos if possible...thanks!

Also, if someone knows a good place in the LA Area to do engine work for this, that would be appreciated

I would choose AMS. An AMS with stock C-couplers would be a dream...

I have the AMS in my car and have nothing bad to say about it. You really cant go wrong w/ any of the aftermarket solutions. Find one that fits your budget and go for it

How did you come to the conclusion that the AA and the AMS is the top two....What criterias and spec made you choose between these two and the rest of the others?

In reading about the different specs when it comes to surface area and the make up of the intercooler...plus the outlet pipe and how it is not at a 90 degree angle like the stock one which causes a lot of restriction. Then overall ratings and reviews from people and the performance that is gained mixed with overall satisfaction and pricing...If there is another one that I should be aware of that is up there, please inform me. I have looked into AA, AMS, Spearco, ETS, Helix, and Evolution as listed above...

I sell both, so have seen both and have got impressions from customers on both, and my vote based on that feedback is for AMS!

I've had good feedback for both. The AA system is larger so you need to shave a bit of the bumper but does offer more surface area. AMS makes an excellent product and is more of a PnP solution.

You forgot HPF and that's currently my top choice.

Go for whichever intercooler makes you happy. They perform so identical to each other that for daily driving, sometimes spirited, it won't make a difference...

Don't forget to add CP-E to the list. You even get an upgraded Oil Cooler. Numbers are there but would love to have some more 3rd party data logs.

THIS! And we usually have them in stock. The AMS is a very nice alternative as well. PM me for a screaming deal on either one.

Does anyone had any dyno specs on the CPE with a JB3 to add to this thread?

Active Autowerke Front Mount Intercooler

The Active Autowerke Front Mounted Intercooler is 88% larger than the stock intercooler. The only cutting that is needed is to cut the radiator shroud to fit the intercooler behind the bumper.

I ran the AMS, and it worked well.
(They all work fine.)

At this point, I would go with either :

VK
HPF

Just because they use the stock couplers and clips, and it just makes for a comfortable install.

VK is a drop-in fit.
HPF requires trimming (like ~every large IC out there)

Sometimes it's just nice to be able to go back to stock in a jiffy.

I'm no mechanic just got a little common sense and a few "basic" tools. I purchased the AMS fmic and was able to install it myself in about 3 hours by myself. I had no idea what I was doing but it really is self explanatory.
My car is a '07 E90 6spd man. I got a custom tune through a local shop that netted me 50rwhp and 70rwtq. After the install and a re-tune compliments of said shop I added another.....50rwhp!! I can't say where it all came from but from looking at the dyno graph the car made almost all of that power higher up in the rev range, hence the AMS fmic is doing a bang up job!
Good luck
Cheers

Doesnt the AMS FMIC require permanent modification? At least thats what it seems like when looking at all the Installation pictures.
