How to use HDC?

My 2006 330xi 6sp has the HDC but the manual is not very clear on how to use it. Can anyone brief me on the procedures to activate the function and how to set a descent speed?

thanks!

What I was told is when you are going down on a steep hill, and as soon as you press the button. The speed will be controlled 20-30km/h.

I don't have it, but my '07 manual indicates that it initially sets the speed as "double normal walking speed" (6mph?) which may then be varied from 3 to 15 mph with the cruise control lever.

I have tried to turn this on while going down a steep hill and it did not turn on. does it have to be before you reach the descent?

I know that you have to be under a certain speed for this to engage. I think it is somewhere around 20-30 mph. Check the manual, it should have the speed listed. Other then that, you can turn it on at any time I believe.

I believe that the vehicle must be at a stop or crawl when it is engaged. I have used it ind it is a nice touch.

When descending a steep hill where there is the potential to slide (such as a snow covered driveway etc...) when stopped, press the HDC button, put the car into first gear and slowly start driving. Once your going the HDC will brake the car as needed without any input from the driver. To adjust the speed at which you descend, pull back on the cruise control stalk to go slower or push to go faster. I would only use this when going 15mph or less. Its really usefully during the winter as I have an extremely steep, long driveway and it works flawlessly. Hope that helps!

i remembered a member on e46fanatics talked about how they hit this while sliding down a snowy descent and it practically saved their life. last year i found myself in slipping down a snowy hill, thought of that post, immediately hit HDC and the car instantly regained its downhill composure and braked me safely to the bottom, felt like pulling the rip cord of a parachute
