If he shut up long enough in the beginning I might be able to get one of the programs on my iPhone to pick it up, but he keeps talking so it isn't coming up with anything.

Doubt the iPhone would get this. Beats are generally custom produced, unless it's a mainstream beat.

Oh. I thought the beat was a specific song because that's what MTV was asking for.

So his rhyme would qualify as a freestyle.

No, that's what it meant when the term was invented, and not just according to BDK. The term freestyle can be, and still is, used in that sense.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freesty...nal_definition

BDK was around when the term was invented, is considered to be one of the most influential MCs of all time, and actually wrote a book on the subject, so I think it's safe to drop the quotes.

Since it was clear you didn't know the different meanings of the term, I was just trying to help you out a bit.

a freestyle, from my experience/opinion, is something you come up with on the spot, not sitting there reading from your phone. you have your opinion as do i, words have different meanings to different people.

and it seems you've got some selective reading...picking only what helps your arguement:

Newer definition

Since the early ‘90s onwards, with the popularization of improvisational rapping from groups/artists such as Freestyle Fellowship through to Eminem’s 8 Mile, ‘freestyle’ has come to be the widely used term for rap lyrics which are improvised on the spot
we're in the year 2010 and that video was also filmed in 2010 so i think it's best to go with the newer definition.

It's pretty clear you didn't know what you were ignorant of the multiple meanings of the term freestyle, otherwise I wouldn't have posted. You were the one who had stated that the OPs video didn't constitute a freestyle because it was written. Your accusation regarding my ostensible selective reading is baseless, as I previously stated there were two meanings to the term, as implied by the following citation:

Different meanings in that context clearly meant multiple meanings. Opinion has nothing to do with this, the meaning of the word in the context of hip-hop and rap is a matter of history and of fact.

No, by my logic, we should accept that sometimes words have multiple meanings, and endeavor to learn them. Here's another good one, the word freestyle as it pertains to swimming. Originally, the word meant that you could swim pretty much any stroke (backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, etc), but now it pretty much means Australian crawl. The fact is though, that you could still swim sidestroke in a FINA freestyle heat if you wanted to. So then the word has two overlapping, yet somewhat distinct meanings. My point is even in swimming, freestyle can mean different things to different people, regardless of age or year. The same holds true for the meaning as it pertains to hip-hop. It can mean either rhyming without any prewritten subject material or rhyming about no subject in particular, even though that rhyme may have been written.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapping

Quote:
There are two kinds of freestyle rap: one is scripted (recitation), but having no particular overriding subject matter, the second typically referred to as "freestyling" or "spitting", is the improvisation of rapped lyrics. When freestyling, some rappers inadvertently reuse old lines, or even "cheat" by preparing segments or entire verses in advance. Therefore, freestyles with proven spontaneity are valued above generic, always usable lines.[63] Rappers will often reference places or objects in their immediate setting, or specific (usually demeaning) characteristics of opponents, to prove their authenticity and originality.
I've personally been listening to hip-hop since around 1984/5, so I've seen and heard both meanings used, both then and now. Listen to the first few seconds of this:

[u2b]1ts7WUQdy-8&start=15[/u2b]

Quote:
This ain't off the top of the head but it's still a freestyle for those that don't know the real meaning.
Hell, listen to the song just because it's a badass song.

BTW, I'm well aware of what year it is.

Listen to what Wiz says at the beginning.....

This is a "free" style, as in you get to hear his style for free.

He says he hears music and WRITES to it right before he spits
