Question 3 series for sale with BMW v8?

I have been looking at buying a 3 series for a while and came across a SUPPOSEDLY "2001 M3" first off the car is a 4 door. second there are no M badges on the car except for an over sized one (possibly after market/fake) on the trunk

another thing i don't have knowledge about is how the car has a BMW V8 engine and 6 speed transmission, which i'm sure has been swapped in, and runs with no obvious problems.

please forgive me if this is the wrong part of the site to post this. I am new to this forum and all forums in general! any insight on what kind of v8/what car this motor and trans. came from would be much appreciated.

i will try to post pictures tomorrow.

P.S. I would search this topic, but like i said i am new and have no idea on what to even look for

Hamann did this first, but I have no idea if they ever made it an actual product.

Let me help you...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M3#E46_M3

The e46 was NOT made in a 4 door. So right off you know it's not an M3.

Post some pics and we may be able to identify the engine. Best bet is to stay away from someones FrankenBimmer...

Take it to a shop to see what you have, 01 m3 are inline 6, and if I recall they did not make sedans, I think the last M sedan of that era was the e36 in 1999.

Where did you come across this? It's a total scam, so many things about this are wrong. 2001 4 door M3.....(Nein).... 2001 M3's were inline 6's, not V8's. So if it is an engine swap, I would also be warry of this since engine swaps if not done correctly can be a pain in the ass and not worth it in the long run.

2001 M3 is the E46 model and it is a coupe with a manual transmission only.

99 was the last 4-door model before that E36.

6 cylinders only.

Minor correction, you could get a E46 M3 with SMG as well as a manual

It probably has the E39 540/740 engine (282-290hp). One of my favorite engines actually.

actually i asked him one more time and got the VIN which states the car is a 2001 540i with the 4.4l v8 and 6speed.... i own a 2002 BMW 525i and from what i understand the 540 should be the same body style but power train is different.

and because this "540i" is smaller than my 525i i believed it to be the 3 series.
thank you for all the positive feedback

seriously, go get what you want... not what some scammer is offering you. I flew to get mine and drove back 1500 miles. It's not that hard to find what you're looking for.

a 540i would be the same body as your 525i...hence the "5xx" it's not a 3er

If they smell of old socks with fish....they have gone bad.

As for the Op, V8 e46 with four doors never saw any great volumes. The only ones would be homemade versions....which actually might be sort of fun if done the correct way.
