Not a window trim vinyl service you would expect

I had been considering wrapping the window trim of my SG e92 in black ever since I bought it 4 months ago. I usually like to do work on my own car if I can because I feel like no one else would pay attention to the smallest details if it wasnt their own car.

After much consideration I decided to let a "professional" do it because of the shortcomings I thought I would face if did it myself. I was afraid of be unable to wrap the entire upper trim piece using once piece of vinyl. I was afraid of not being able to tuck the vinyl especially at the corners.

I decided to let a "highly recommended and reputable" vendor/shop/member on this forum, who I will leave unnamed for now, do the work for me. The work that I received was anything but spectacular. The shortcomings I feared so much were present. To me, some parts honestly looked like someone tried to electrical tape my car. I was even left with a few damages to my car.

Here are some pics for everyone to judge themselves. Maybe I am too harsh and am expecting too much. Please provide some input especially if you have had your window trim wrapped before by a reputable shop.

I know thats a lot of pictures but I just wanted to provide every detail. Im left with lines that are not straight, untucked vinyl, peeling vinyl, and even scratches from their razor blade.

Vinyl will never be perfect but i would agree that that is a subpar job. The scratches from the razor blade is ridiculous.

That shouldn't be acceptable. I did my own car and even though it was my first time, it looks a lot better than yours, without any scratches or bubbles.
I would contact the reputable vendor first and see what they say.

I agree, not acceptable!! I own my own business and we do that and interior stuff everyday. If that went out of my shop I would do everything to make it right. Also, vinyl wrapping those is only a band-aid, they really need to be painted. I know painting is a little more money, but if done right you will never have to worry about it.

i'm tempted to just sand/prime/paint the thing myself. it should be especially easy in matte black. unfortunately, i haven't read any success stories about that. MAC wants $400. i feel if i'm spending that much, i may as well buy oem pieces.

i wouldn't even remove the pieces. seems easy enough to tape off and spray.

Tofu - be the first! I want to get rid of my chrome trim too, but even professional vinyl doesn't look that good and I can't justify the cost to paint it. Seems like an easy enough DIY with careful sanding/spray, but I want to see someone else have success first...

i do not have a garage, so the paint would be susceptible to contaminants. i would give it a shot if i knew all the effort i put into it would yield good results.

that's exactly how anyone else (professional) would do it anyway, only difference is i wouldn't be removing the trim

Looks like my roof when i first had it done. Fast Signs did mine, and they had to use three section just for my roof and did the same little strip to hide the conjoining points. Needless to say I got my money back in full. I would highly suggest the same and find another company to redo the job. Sorry to hear about the bad experience.

@OP - Like others have said, it will never be perfect but that's ridiculous.

I had my trim painted for a couple hundred bucks and turned out great. It's pretty standard for the trim not to be removed and painted on the car as it's really easy to bend/break.

Right on, I believe the OEM ones are only $180 a side. If they want $400 you should go OEM. I believe there is a point where companies do not do the research to find out that "oh my gosh" the parts new are less than my paint. If you charge more than new, why bother, the business will go elsewhere.

My company charges $250 for the project as a reference for you all. We leave the parts installed and completely tape off the whole vehicle. If you decide to DIY make sure you have everything covered perfect. Paint, even spray can paint, can go in places you never though when airborne. Buy some really good "auto body" tape and paper. This will make all the difference. Taping is very important, as you start taping off the windows you will notice there is a fine art to applying it to the rubber weather stripping.

Maybe this will help you all a little.
