Police speed-camera van
Does anyone know if there is any margin for error with the mobile camera vans and whether there is a maximum time limit in which the police have to notify you?
I passed one at an indicated 66 (63 actual) in a 60 limit on the A9 north of Aviemore and I'm now sweating on a brown envelope through the letterbox. |

Well he is very lucky because I was done for 73 mph on the A9 last year with a bloody camera van. And even worse I was looking at the bloody thing and it never registered

If you are the registered keeper and do not receive a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) within 14 days you are in the clear.
Based on the speed involved I would say that you were fine anyway. |

I'm in the same boat with a van sitting whilst travelling out of Hull last week. Helen will know the spot. Unbelievably I was telling my passenger about the van as I came over the brow of the flyover, spotted some trucks filtering in from the sliproad, pulled into lane two, spotted the van, looked down at the speedo and found myself at 48 in a 40!!. What pisses me off is as I was concentrating on the trucks, looking in my rear view to manoeuvre, flash the trucks out, my lack of concentration on the speed coming down a hill has left me close to another 3 points and £60 fine, not to mention the increased insurance premium. As it was a hire car I'll be sweating for some weeks to come as there is no limit to the nip coming through.

Yep, the ACPO guidelines are +10% + 2mph.
So 35 in a 30, 68 in a 60, 79 in a 70 etc. These are actual speeds of course, so as bmw speedos over read by about 4 mph at 70, that means you could read up to 72 in a 60 and still be ok. These limits apply in the average speed zones too, so you're fine sailing through m-way 50 average zones at a real 57, which is an indicated 60 easy. As said, you've got 14 days tops to receive the NIP. read here for the best info www.pepipoo.com |

You have to be ruthless on that flyover, bugger letting anyone out and just keep your eye on the speedo, true this almost feels morally wrong as your not watching the road and causing others a slight difficulty for entering the slip road but its not your fault, its the fault of the "safety camera partnership/saftety cameras PLC!" |

I can confirm its 10% +2 as a general rule although that is discretionary and not a legal requirement (as per ACPO guidelines). What is a legal requirement, is that the Police MUST send a NOIP within 14 days. They do not need to prove that you received it, just that it was sent (ie proof of posting).
A couple of things though, should you be unfortunate to receive a letter, you can ask for photographic evidence if you were unsure who the driver was at the time. Secondly, if you do no want to "challenge" the evidence, you can ask to attend a driver rectification course as a friend of mine did even though they didn't offer this as an alternative. He paid an administration fee, attended the course and no further action followed. Lastly do not piss them about stating it wasn't your car, someone must have cloned you plates, nicked your car etc (unless it's true of course!). That could land you in serious hot water with a charge such as perverting the course of justice etc.

Yup, have been going on the 10% + 2 rule for years. You'll be fine ;-)
