Winter Tyres

I have the normal M-sport staggered wheels:

225/40/18 front
255/35/18 rear

Can I put 225/40/18 winter tyres on all round?

Nooooo - not the winter tyre sizes again

You can fit that front size all round, they'll just look a bit stretched on the rear wheels, might look a bit odd that's all.

You'll have a tyre 30mm narrower on a rim 13mm narrower. A big difference really.

I know, but I got confused on the other thread.

Am I alright with the following:

225/40/18 front
265/35/18 rear

i.e. 10mm wider at the back?

I ran 225/40/18 and 245/40/18 without any problems. These were a good fit for the 8j/8.5j staggered set-up

A 255 is already quite wide for an 8.5j rim.

As a 225 goes on a 8j front nicely, a 255 is 30mm wider than a 225 and on on a rim only 13mm wider.

A 265 would be wider still.

This is the same conundrum I had last year and ended up going for a square setup with 8j rims all round.

But if you want to keep you OE rims, I reckon 245/40/18 rear would be nice fit like Ed says but they will have a 20mm larger diameter than a 255/35.

For our 18's the OE tyre wall height to aim for is 90mm i.e.

255/35 = 89.25mm
225/40 = 90 mm

But 245/40 = 98mm

Tricky choice!

So what is the best set up. No more you could do this or that. What is going to give me the best chance of staying on the road and not giving Insurance the chance to say I had wrong tyres should I trash the car.

Should I change to four even sized wheels? Should I just replace my tyres like for like with winter ones? Aaarrgh!

I looked on the door label for the tyres and on mine it said the 2 options i had for mud and snow were, 225/45/17 91 H or 225/45/17 94 V XL - BMW said these sizes are approved and fine to use. Insurance said, providing they are the correct sizes that BMW state, no issue.

So i bought a new set of BMW alloys from ebay 225/45/17 and just had the Wintac extremes delivered in 94 V XL.

I had to get new wheels anyway, as 19" is a little big i think.

Thank you,

I'll send an email to BMW, get it in writing, then Insurance then get prices.

If you are a bit paranoid about only fitting 'approved' stuff, want to play it super-safe and stay onside with BMW then just follow the rating plate.

That tells you all the sizes for winters that are 'approved' for your car, you just choose which you prefer.

Easy.

rang vredestein Uk last week. Helpful sales lady advised that the 225/35/18's in windtrac extreme will not be coming to the UK, production run not planned. The 265/35/18 are being delivered in December, although mytyres are stocking them. She said the 265/35/18's fall within the 5% aspect ratio tolerance limit. They would be suitable, she took details of my 330d and rang back after checking.
I dont want to change my rear wheels, just want to remove current non-rft's and rreplace with the winter tyres. Will probably go for the 265/35/18's.

No issues with that, but bit of a gamble as getting run flats off is not an easy process and it's entirely possible to damage the tyre getting it off.

I took the view that, putting smaller cheaper winters on will a) save on the wear of the expensive runflats b) re-coup most of the cost on resale c) be marginally better in the snow due to the narrower tyre and d) save the salt and grit wear on the allow lacquer e) tyres are cheaper to buy and replace too

Don't discount a second set

Indeed. This is the insurance/warranty-safe option (not that it ought to make any difference, but you know what they are like!).

Are there no 17's that would fit the 335? If so then surely 225/45/17 all round is best for winters?

Also if buying from mytyres it does not matter what is/is not coming to the UK as all their stuff comes direct from Europe anyway.

Personally I'd go 225's all round either 17's or 18's in your position.

Yes there are 17" wheels that fit a 335, I have a set on my 335d with 225x45 winter tyres. Need to check the style number for the wheels but they are genuine BMW.
