Altimax Arctic review - not so hot
Since my Dunlop M3s ROF were done, I decided to try out the General Altimax Arctic. I've seen decent reviews both here and on tirerack, even when non-studded (which is what I went with)
The good: They are extremely quiet. (there - token positive) The rest: I have had them on for one week, and I can't stand them. The car feels like it's floating on marshmallows. Worst tire I have ever owned (Dunlop M3 ROF, Michelin Alpin X1, Kumho 712's, Some OEM POS on a 1992 Ford Festiva) These are 205/55/16. I hope that my shop will buy them back and sell them as used, and I will gladly do that. I first ran them at 35psi and cranked them up to 42psi tonight just to see if it's salvageable. No such luck. There is no turn-in with this tire - it literally feels like all inputs are going through a rubber band. Moving the steering wheel back and forth by +-20 degrees at the correct rate is enough to get the whole steering / wheel mechanism to go into resonance, to the point where the car starts breaking loose and DCT prevents everything from going south. When i first had the tires on I thought they were underinflated at 15psi (they were at 35) Accelerating and decelerating are fine, just don't try to turn. Since I live in the mountains and occasionally have to dodge critters, these won't do it. Trying to swerve with these will result in a catastrophe. Ok, I'm done. |
