Blackberry Pearl and/or SE W810i . . .
Hi there all-
I've done the search for these and this is what I've sort of summed up. 1. Blackberry Pearl syncs with BMW. 2. Pearl shows signal strength. 3. Phone book actually lists name of contact plus mobile vs. home vs. work 4. W810i syncs with BMW. 5. Signal strength shows up initially, but never changes. My question is does the SE w810i list the type of phone number of the contact, similar to how the Pearl does? Also, JSpira had mentioned that the issue with the w810i's signal strength not changing was something he was working on with SE engineers. That was back in Nov. Does anyone or JSpira himself know if this has been fixed yet? By the way, everyone here has been really helpful from when I was deciding on my car (almost 1 1/2 years ago) to current issues. And JSpira's advice and articles in the BMW magazine has been amazingly great. Just thought I'd say it and say, "thanks!" |

You're welcome.
Now, here's the answer. Get the Pearl. The W810i - as much as I liked it - stopped working several times with the car. That is consistent with what BMW engineers have told me, that it is possible for a mobile to appear to be compatible - but x cycles down the road, it won't work.

I had it for a month... its a bunch of great ideas and usefull features that dont really work well... the only thing i found extreamly useful was the push feature... as far as internet, messaging and email function its garbage compared to palm. if palm switches to a push method blackberry will be for the inferior... looks cool tho

Actually, the Pearl has one of the best user interfaces I've seen on a phone (let's see, I have about 25 Bluetooth-enabled mobiles sitting here right now). Its telephony functions are much clearer than most other mobiles and it has a slimmer form factor.
I would say it ties the Palm 750 in functionality but the 750 does not work with a BMW and it's larger.

Pearl . . .
Wow, that's kind of unfortunate about the w810i. I have been tempted by the Pearl and although it provides much more functionality than the w810i, I guess I'm just partial to the SE phones. I had a T637 before my current Motorola and used it with my Acura TL and it was great. I liked the interface and it just worked.
Too bad about the w810i. I guess where I'm at is that I'm trying to weigh the functionality of the phone and my car, and my current need to simplify complex gadgets in my life. I know, it sounds weird especially in a post on a tech subject in a $40K car forum. Just a quick question, JSpira. What happened with your w810i and the BMW? Did it just fail to pair one day or did it pair and not sync the phone book or would it pair and unpair randomly? Thanks again. |

Pairing is a one time event - so that wasn't the problem. What happened was that it looked like it was trying to place a call - but nothing happened. This occurred multiple times, too many to be a coincidence.

w810i issues . . .
Quote:
How long did it take before these issues came up with the w810i? Have they resolved at all? in other posts on other threads, you've mentioned that certain car software versions and phone software versions may allow the phones to be "compatible" with the car, have you found one that would work with the w810i? Or maybe your car software and phone software prevent the compatiblity? I'm sorry for all the questions and I know you encouraged me to get the Pearl earlier in this thread . . . it's just that I think the Pearl will not be as useful to me outside of my car. Unfortunately, the w810i is looking like it may not be as useful to me INSIDE my car. I guess, in the end, I'm just hoping for that perfect cell phone that would work seemlessly with my car, my computer, and my general life . . . too much to ask for? Maybe . . . but I thought when Bluetooth was added to devices, those manufacturers would stick to the Bluetooth group's guidelines. |

I just finished writing a review of my favorite Quadband mobiles for Business Traveler and both were included. I like them both (ok, the fact that you can easily inadvertently hit the Walkman button is a slight irritant) but the W810i will eventually not work in your car based on current software of both (I have the latest sw on the car and the phone). What concerns you about the Pearl?

I've been using the SE W810i for 4 months now with my 06 330i and after the firmware upgrade on the phone (CXC1250318, R4EA031), it's been working fine, no drop call, everything sync. and show signal strength (it will change).

I'll try updating - last time I tried, the phone told me I was current.

Bomb-
That's some good news to hear. I've heard some reports like yours. It does make me very hopeful. JSpira- Thanks for checking too. I have an unopened w810i right here in front of me and I've been debating now for about a week whether or not to return/exchange for the Pearl. I know, I'm pathetic. I really do appreciate all your help regarding this issue and other issues that I've posted. |

Confessions of a cellular nerd
From the point of view of someone who sells BB Pearls:
I PERSONALLY don't care for them. The trackball just feels weird in my hand, and that is still after having demo'ed it for a week. Also, there might be something to do with the fact that I'm used to WM 5 based devices (I rock a T-Mo Dash most of the time). HOWEVER: If you are wanting a mobile messaging device, and don't care for mobile web-browsing as much, the Pearl is a good device for that purpose. Also, the long rumored 8800 is SUPPOSED to be hitting soon, so you might care to hold off and check that out if you are still a fence sitter (Google for more info...) I have not tested any of these with the BMW Bluetooth system, as I haven't picked up my 335i yet (thats coming this Sat). |
