To BOV or not to BOV
what do you guys think about BOV on our cars? i know the stock setup just recycles the air into the intake. is that an issue for tuned setups? does a BOV actually make any difference for tuned cars?
if it's just for the sounds, how do you all feel about the BOV sound? i ask because i'm considering jumping on the JBSpeed deal the sponsored deals section of e90post. |

A BOV vents air to the atmosphere, whereas a re-circulating valve re-circulates the air back into the system. The sound from the BOV comes from the air venting.
I can't speak to how the BMW's engine in setup, as I'm more familiar with the Audi. In the Audi, it's necessary to re-circulate the air.

Diverter Valves (DV) are NOT the same as a BOV.
If you buy a BOV and get a recirculating kit, then all you've done is make a DV.

Its just for sound. People going towards stage 3 setups may choose to put one on because it will hold more boost than the diaphragm stock DVs. But, you could just buy upgraded DVs. Also, some dont replace them until their stock DVs leak which happens on some and not on others. Personally, I dont want to draw any unnecessary attention to my car. I'd go aftermarket DVs and recirculate them.

Doesn't the BMW computer throw an engine code if it doesn't get recirculated air back like it's expecting?

It really depends on which BOV you get and the design with the spring rate. You can't just throw out BOVs from watching the Fast and the Furious movies. Mine has a very short and distinct "psh" noise, not like these annoying HKS that seem to last forever and can be heard from 5 miles away. I believe the BOV is slightly more efficient and holds the boost better. Recirculating the air, although it seems in principle to be ok, just seems like extra work that has to be done.

The problem with the Stock DVs' isnt' that they can't hold high boost...on a single gear dyno pull or street pull, it will not fail. However, where the stock DV's fail is re-sealing in a timely manner upon releasing/shifting. So in that sense...aftermarket DV's or a BOV will yeild better driving performance.
