Interesting read...Do you wave at other BMW owners?

Just came across this on the US thread, do any of you here wave to other BMW drivers?...Do know we have more general signs like these that were particularly prevalent when I worked in South Africa for a couple of years..the high beam/blink for warning of traffic cops ahead and the hazard lights briefly on as a gesture to say thankyou but any for communication between BMW drivers?..offcourse another given in SA was always leave the right lane to the BMW's and move out of their way because for some reason BMW drivers were always perceived as dangerous, prone to road rage and carrying guns(had a company Toyota back then so I would know though think was more a stereotype, the minibus drivers actually carried guns and is common when you enter a bank to be asked to deposit any weapon/gun in their lockers)...maybe we could come up with our own sign language like a brief blink of the hazards when saying hi to a BMW owner, 2 blinks to say great car..would also know they were on e90post then and make our time on the road more interesting

no. will not wave to other BMW drivers.

On my motorbike I would always give the nod to another biker though.

...and I know people who drive the old beetles have a waving thing going on too...

but I don't think BMW's are individual enough to justify its own signaling.

If I saw a BMW with a E90Post.com sticker... then that would be different.

Not a BMW thing at all. It is (or possibly "was") a common thing for Alfa drivers to give a wave or nod.

as an avid motorbike rider, i always nod to other motorcylists.

as for cars, thats a different story - looks kinda wanky if you wave to other BMW owners.

Certainly used to do the wave thing in the Alfasud I had - even the Northerners in their proper Alfa Romeos would wave back. When we ran Citroens, the wave used to be obligatory - nothing would enrage more than a fellow GS or Xantia driver ignoring you but once the C4 came along, nobody cared any more.

I've never seen modern BMWs wave at each other and the E90/91 are a bit ordinary to expect such behaviour in perhaps.

There are far too many BMWs to wave at. A mutual stare-off often indicates you acknowledge one another.

That being said, I've gotten a couple of waves and stares.

This reminds me of some bizarre behaviour when I lived in china years ago.
Americans would come up to me and start talking, or wave, or nod.

I assume they did this solely because I was caucasian. and I was in China. And this meant we had some form of connection. As opposed to us being, caucasian, and not in china.

I got so annoyed with it I eventually started pretending I couldn't speak english.

So no, I don't wave at other BMW drivers. I do look with envy at the e92s though, and those z4 e89s

Interesting, I've had 3 or 4 highbeams flashes from other BMW drives on the road over the past 5 years..I never acknowledged back due to my poor eyesight, by the time i recognise their car was a BMW, they've already drove past me. will pay more attention next time.

It depends who's driving. I literally look like i'm 13 so i don't wave to the 60yr old lady driving her 320 but if there is a young person driving or if they are in tastfully modified bmw (aka no chromies) then i'll give them a nod, wave or flash.

135i coupes are rare enough so when I wave, there usually is a wave and a nod in response.

Otherwise, too many mums in BMWs for this to work.

Has anyone seen old Valiant Charger ads. I had a mate when I was at uni who had a genuine E46 Charger.

Due to their small numbers, Charger driver's had a compulsory manufacturer's greeting for each other. Even across 4 lanes of traffic. Anytime another Valiant or Charger owner drove past one another, out the window went both driver's right up arms, a "peace sign" straight up in the air. Hey Charger !! , and this was in the mid 90's!

Couldn't believe it when I first experienced this as a passenger. I thought that these guys are nuts. Thinking back though, it was pretty cool to see..

Only to people I know and none of them drive a BMW, so no, not even an M3 driver... Sorry.

Sadly, well old enough to remember the 'Hey Charger' campaign. Still stuck in my head!

This thread brought back a really hilarious event back when i had my Mocha Brown X3. I was entering a centre car park gate when another Mocha Brown X3 was exiting. OH MY! The driver in his mid 50's got soo excited he took both hands off the steering wheel and gave me the most hectic two hand wave. I started laughing soo hard that i was cm's away from hitting the side barriers of the entrance. Poor guy must have never seen another Mocha Brown X3 before...i gave him a wave back while trying to regain control of my car with tears (from laughing) rushing down my face.

Other than this occasion i have never been given a wave or high beamed at by other bimmer drivers. As others have said there are BMW's everywhere and we just don't think about acknowledging everyone of them.

The Chargers in the ad are VH Chrysler Chargers which were produced between 1971-73. I assume the ad is from the same period.
