new member needs help with 2006 320i. On start up all is ok until I put it in reverse or drive then bad rattling from under engine which goes after about 2 mins. Also a slight lag as i drive from standing start a kind of grumble... My mechanic is thinking harmonic balancer ???? we have had car 6 weeks and getting fed up ..Car is great otherwise..

He did say Reverse or Drive - so either as engine/transmission is under load or revs drop I suppose.
Honestly could be so, so many things I doubt you'll get a useful diagnosis from forums.

In my opinion you are wasting time and money with your normal mechanic. Try and find a trusted bmw independent who has worked on and deals with these cars on a regular basis.
They may charge more per hour but will usually cost less in the long run as they will be able to find, diagnose and repair the problem quicker than a "general" mechanic who will spend hours trying to figure his way around the engine that he hasn't had much experience with it at your expense. Good luck with getting it sorted and hopefully it's something cheap/quick to fix ![]() EDIT: i just saw that you said you've had the car 6 weeks so should still be under statutory warranty. In that case return it to the purchaser (assuming it was a dealer) and ask them to repair it... |

I thought statutory warrenty usually is only for 30 days. Definitely worth a shot thou. If tranny problem, it could hurt.

thanks guys
You know what, to get responses like that from you lot and me being new makes me realise i've hit the right forum, thanks ... Anyway I took car to bmw specialist and he is almost sure its a defective belt tensioner ,he even showed me the difference in noise if he put pressure on it with a shifter. So car is going to get a new one fitted next week. He even said if it isnt that then he'll put the old one back no charge....so will keep you informed ok.. As a post script .... we bought the car private and it is a 2006 320i...

Yes, i think finding a trusted bmw independent is your best bet with a car that is out of warranty.
Good to hear that he has diagnosed it and is pretty confident in what he has found. How much has he quoted for the fix if it is the belt tensioner? |
