E90 tail light idea
Has anyone just replaced the outter portion of their tail lights with blacklines - to make it a "clearline" OEM tail light... like the picture below (this particular pic was just blacklines photoshopped by someone to look clear)
I want to keep OEM taillights instead of getting an aftermarket brand - but on JB I would rather have a "clear lines" style of the blackline lights... let me know if anyone has done this and please post pics - i am worried that the outter black line tail lights are still a bit smoked, so they wouldn't match the stock inner tail lights - but have no idea...

Purchase Blacklines. Remove back panel. Spray paint panel silver (instead of the silver-black). Assemble it back together and enjoy. also, its been discussed on here i believe.

Just make sure to get some Philips Silver Vision bulbs or better yet LEDs for your rear turn signals after you do this. Otherwise you'll have that ugly egg yolk effect in your new housing.

I was under the impression LED's throw error codes - plus I still don't think I want to put a non-OEM part on my car... I'm sort of OCD like that.
Nobody has any info or pics on whether the outter blackline lights are the same white color as the inner stock lights? Do the outter blackline tail lights have black paint on the "lines" or are they painted the white that matches the stock inner lights?

thanks for that pic - it clears up that outter blacklines have a tinted look just like the inner blacklines.
Some other pictures I have seen make it look like the outters are more of a white color than black. Just to clarify, the whole reason for this post is I do not like the tinted look of the blacklines on JB. I would rather have the clear look with the blackline style, oh and OEM... this gets confusing

I installed the hella clearlines. (probably more accurate silverlines) they come with bulbs installed. just plug them into harness. they include the silvervision bulbs that flash amber, but are coated silver, so lens does not look yellow. you can just replace the outer housings, but there is a slight difference in appearance between stock inner housing and hella housing. i'll post some pics after i find them on my HD.

I attached a few pix. i think they are on the small side. my bad. two are rear shots with turn signals on and off. the other shows comparison of stock inner housing versus hella housing. i think the stock one (lower one) has slightly fosted glass around back-up light, whereas hella has clear lens.

Get these and be done with it: http://www.hella.com/produktion/Hell...90_upgrade.jsp
Hella has been an OE supplier of lights to BMW for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if they are the manufacturer of blacks lines for BMW.

Thanks for those pics crimson - very nice looking tail lights - and they kept the oem blackline design, which i like.
And good info from shragon, didn't know hella supplied lights for bmw. Good to know. Questions for crimson - Do you have any bigger pics, and maybe some with the lights on? Are the red portion of the lights exactly the same as stock taillights? Same exact design, color, and material used? Also is there any bleeding that passes light through from the turn signal into the other areas? (i have noticed some people are saying this happens on the blacklines) Definitely considering buying these from hella...

I too think Hella manufactures stock lights. These lights are identical to stock except for turn signals. Here are some more pix. Unfortunately there is a bit of light bleed from the light tubes, as on the blacklines. its only visible from certain angles. the pic of the inside of the lights shows stock in red, Hella in grey.
