Continental ExtremeContact DW - any reviews?
I've had Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's on my car for a while now and since they are slowly reaching the end of their lives, I'm looking for new tires. I loved everything about the PS2's... however, they are just too expensive. I would love to just get a new set of PS2's but I want to look at all the options. I'm not looking to downgrade either... If i can't find anything else, i'll probably just go for the PS2's again for safety..
On tirerack, Continental ExtremeContact DW was rated higher but has less miles reported. I've been trying to find reviews on the DW (not DWS!) on here but have not been able to find anything. Does anyone have those tires? Any solid reviews? These tires are rated higher and they are cheaper too.... Would be a great option to save me a couple hundred dollars!

I've got DW's on right now, but only drove a total of 60 miles on them. I cannot give you a solids review yet, but I do find they ride better than the Falket FK452's I had before.

Hey Bartman, just wondering if it has been worth the increased cost? The DWS's cost about $500 more per set where I'm buying from.

The DW's are pretty nice. Ive had them on my S-Line A4 for about 1,000 miles, some of which were in the rain. I purchased them over the Contact 3's cause they cost less and have a slightly higher tread wear so they'll last a little longer. The tires have great freeway manners and really good cornering grip, very predictable at the limit. The wet grip was really surprising and felt really good treading through puddles and such on the freeway.
As for the DWS's, look at the tread wear, 500!. |

I have the DWs and love them. I don't think they are quite as responsive as the PS2s. I got the DWs for the comfort and the wet traction. They definitely won't hold a candle to the PS2s for pure dry traction and responsiveness. Coming from the PS2s you may be a bit disappointed.

I started with Bridgestone RFT's then went to PS2's and now have DW's on my E90 with ZSP (225/45/17 + 255/40/17).
The RFT's had the best steering response and felt the most "planted". This makes sense given the stiff sidewalls and BMW tuned the sports suspension to work with these tires. But the ride was terrible on rough roads. When the PS2's were new, they felt softer and rode better than the RFT's. After break-in, steering response improved but the ride got rougher. After about 15K miles, they started to feel like RFT's - sharp but harsh. When the DW's were new, they felt very soft, which meant a great ride but a significant drop in steering response and a loss of that wonderful "planted" feeling. Now that they are broken in, the steering response is pretty good and the ride has stiffened up, but it's still quite good. The bottom line is that the RFT's provided the best steering response, followed closely by broken-in PS2's and trailed by the DW's. But the DW's provide the best ride and lowest noise. Given the rough roads I drive, I'm happy with DW's. If I want better steering response, I can add a couple of PSI. There's one more thing to consider - the weight of all 4 tires on my E90 was: RFT's: 116 lbs, PS2's: 92 lbs, DW's: 86 lbs The DW's weigh 30 pounds less than the RFT's! Based on the research I've done, that much reduction in rotational mass should help acceleration and it feels that way to me. Last edited by driverman; 11-15-2010 at 08:43 AM.. |
