Ok to have two tires with different tread on the rear?
One of my rear RFTs got a major crack on the sidewall driving at ~25mph over a piece of wood on the road! My other rear has 10/32nds left on it still.
Is it okay to replace the busted tire with one that has tread close to 6/32nds on it? That's the best used tire I found around me. My local tire shop guy tried to scare me against doing that and get a new one from him, but does it really matter? I'm a recent e90 buyer so spare me if I'm being lame. The rear tire spec is 255/40/17 (94V, RFT) on a 328i RWD with Sports package and staggered configuration, if that helps. |

10/32 is pretty much a new tire! Ive seen tires come with less tread brand new!
IMO Id agree with your tire guy. The used tire will be pretty worn compared to the one on the car already.

Thanks, it's ridiculous though to pay almost 300$ for a tire that does not even sustain running over something the size of a pothole at 25mph. I don't know who at BMW chose those Bridgestone RE050A's for the e90's - I've mostly read bad reviews about those online. Wish I had the money to replace all fours right now with non-RFTs!
What's the worst that could happen if I do have a 10/32 and a 6/32 in the rear? Last edited by phoenix32; 11-17-2010 at 12:08 AM.. |

I dont think its that big of a deal but it might throw off your at the limit handling or hard braking... I personally wouldn't run different tires on the same axle, different front to back is another thing.

Thanks for all the replies! It does look like the general opinion is to have both tires of the same tread in the rear, so I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and order a new RFT. It's almost impossible to find a used tire with anywhere near 10/32nds remaining, so getting a new one seems to be the only way out of this.
Where should I buy it from? TireRack has it for 267+shipping, does the mighty Forum recommend any other seller for a better deal? Also, is their Road Hazard Warranty any good, anyone have experience actually using it? Last edited by phoenix32; 11-17-2010 at 04:31 AM.. |

If the different tires are on the rear then get yourself 2 new None-RFT from Tire Rack they will get you the best deal. Once your front tires need changing then you can change them also to None-RFT. This is what I would do (if I was in your shoes ~ you mentioned that you wish you had the money to change them all, this is the next best thing). As long as you have the same tires on the same axel (front or rear) you are fine. Remember in the old days people had 2 summer tires in the front and 2 winter tires in the back. It is just for the last 20 so years that people have winter tires on all 4 corners. The 2 tires you take off you can sell on the internet it will properly pay for one of your new tires. If all fails I suggest you go to a good tire shop, speak to the Manager let him look at your tire issue and let him guide you. Good luck ![]()

![]() That sounded a bit lame. So then, I talked to someone at Firestone cos they mostly seem like they know what they're doing and the guy at Firestone said they'll sell me the non-RFTs for the rears but won't put them on because of "Safety Reasons" and obviously they don't suggest I do so either. ![]() |
