225 Tyre on 8.5J wheel

Looking at a set of 17" E90 wheels for the winter but they have been fitted with 225 tyres all round even on a staggered wheel setup. Being told by a major wheel and tyre dealer who says it is fine, whats the real thinking?

Also as a majorly cheap way of keeping my 19s good in the winter by avoiding all the road salt on them , I might just stick with the normal tyres that the wheels have fitted rather than go for winters. Would like winters but ebay all cleared out of decent part worn tyres and really can't justify the cost of a new set given the car does less than 100 miles per week.

225's are standard fit on many 8.5J BMW rims, Example a 320d E90 can have them all round, not staggered.

Not an issue, lots of posts on here saying that people have this set up. Also tyre fitters will not do dangerous fits as you would be able to sue.

Are you sure 320d are not mostly runnig 8" wheels all round hence the 225 tyre?

Here show a staggered set up, but it illustrates BMW think 225's are ok on 8.5's

It's fine, I have a set of staggered 17'' 194M wheels for winter with 225/45 tyres. They stretch a little on the back, but it's not that noticeable.

Would you still stick with 225/40 front and 225/35 rear? (on 18" mv3 staggered)

I would say they would look stretched. It's 30mm from the 255's.

Why not go 245/40/R18?

The stretch really is not that noticeable. I can snap a couple of pics of my winter tyre setup if anyone is interested in doing something similar.

Looks just fine to me.

Nice to have some photo evidence.

Although to correct some earlier posts, no 225 is sent from the factory on a 8.5J rim.

Any car with a square setup, and thus 225s on the rear will have 8J rims all round, only staggered cars get 8.5J rears and they would get 255 tyres.
