My turbo people.. when gas gauge says ---- how many miles have you gone?

Hey guys, just picked up my 08 335xi coupe... wondering how many miles you guys have gone since it blinks ---- for the miles left? I drove about 13 miles since it said that and I was nervous.. but I made it to the gas station. I know all cars are different, how many gallons are actually really left?

Also, something totally different.. is the speedometer off in our cars? When I am going 65 it seems like I am going 62-63 mph.. I have sport package with 17s.. on my 335xi coupe..

I would NEVER let my gas get that low so I couldnt really tell you about that, but yes I believe you are correct about the speed. Only way I check that is those speed displays from the Piggys.

I went about ~5 miles with the gauge on "----" once, so I can confirm you can go at least that far!

+1 5 miles sounds right. I was shitting bricks because I was stuck in traffic. Last thing I want is to cause a larger jam because I ran out of gas!

Wow, 13 miles? I have once driven 5 miles or so and was very nervous, so I wound up putting gas in a fairly clean and big yet unfamiliar gas station. Next time I'll continue driving until I get to one of "my" gas stations.

It's a few miles off. Coding can add multiple features, including a digital speedometer added to the same display where you can see your mpg and such. The digital speedometer can be configured to match the "inflated" reading on the needle or to display the actual speed. It's cool to watch the needle @ 70 and read ~67 on the digital reading.

analog speedo correction must be the #1 requested feature on the PROcede right now. Check out that V4 wishlist thread!

DME coding to enable or disable certain features.

Some examples of features that can be enabled:
Close all windows and sunroof with remote (disabled on US cars), digital speedometer, allow use of foglights with high beams and more...

Some example of 'features' that can be disabled:
DVD playback security (so you can play a DVD on your iDrive screen while driving), passenger seatbelt gong, turn off small yellow LED in headlights, turn off iDrive navigation warning when starting the car and more...

A lot of people are paying $150+ for this to be done by programmers remotely, but if you look in the right places you can likely find people close to you that can do it easily and for much cheaper.

Hi Guys,

I've driven it to completely empty (dead car). It took 26.2 miles after it reading "--". This was cruising on the highway at 80mph. I regularly run it to 20 miles past "--", but one time I had an extra can of gas in the trunk and wanted to figure it out.

When it goes completely empty, it is completely non-dramatic. Engine revs drop to 1000, you have no engine power, but you have power steering and just pull over. Pour the gas in, the engine started and only took 1-2 seconds longer to fire up.

Enjoy.

Does anyone else find the sound of someone purposely running their car until it stalls funny? I know the reason behind it. And I would do the same thing if i needed to fill up with pure race gas. But from the perspective of normal people, they would think you are crazy

Jokes aside, very interesting, thanks for sharing.

I think it's even funnier picturing someone with a bright blue can of VP MS109 on the side of the road pouring it into their luxury sedan after they did this ^

BTW - I ran mine for ~10 miles after I saw --- and it took 16.065 gallons at the station. I believe our tanks hold 16.1 gallons.

Thanks guys!

So if 26.2 on the highway I presume around 80mph or so.. then your probably looking at 17 miles in city traffiic. My 13 miles was 90% highway.

Sounds like someone with too much time on their hands.....

Good information, good thing to know. I usually just wait for the light to go on, that is a good time for those conservative people.

On my Acura I went 62 miles when the gas light went on, I never ran out of gas and it was buried on E. 2.0 liter 4 banger FTW.

This nazi sled eats gas in comparison.

Thanks, I would love to utilize some of these options. Some of them actually were features in my old 330ci, like the windows going up/down if you held the lock/unlock and the fog lights, I got it used so maybe it had been modded. Either way I would want a lot of these, any idea on where to get this done?

I did this on the way home from Watkins Glen...no gas station had 93 in PA or in NJ early sunday morning (3-4AM) or they were closed on the highway...all they had was 87 and diesel.

So somewhere in the mountains near the NJ border I was running out of options (all mom and pop gas stations were closed) so I pressed on for 15 min after the --- appeared....I was worried it would stall out sooner due to me going up and down the hills.

I took a chance with one last gas station, which ended up being down a hill off an exit. If this place was closed that was gonna be it...I wouldnt have had gas to make it up the hill. Lucky for me he was open and I pulled a left (and it said no left turn at the light but I did anyway) and rolled up the ramp into the station..and promptly stalled.

To make things more funny a cop saw me pull the left and pulled in behind me with his lights on, asking me why i made the left. So I gave him the story then asked him if he would be so kind as to help me push it up to the pump...LOL

He let me go, and the gas station dude said I was lucky...hes usually closed sunday mornings at that time but he had inventory to do, so he came in and opened the place up...if it wasnt for that I would have been sleeping there for another 4 hours LOL

I wouldn't be surprised if back then it came like that from factory and they introduced these "clipplings" on newer models to protect themselves from lawsuit-happy US.
