N54 water pump failure.

i just changed a water pump and stat on a 335i. the car came in with its cooling fan constantly on at full speed, really loud. car is also out of warranty. just thought id share some pictures with a fair warning... parts are expensive and expect about 8+ hrs and some patience to replace.

Seems like a lot of extra work to take the front off, when it can all be done from below. It's a tight workspace, so it really depends on how long it took to take the front off. I had mine replaced by the dealer as the car was in warranty when it broke.

did you try resetting the ECU before changing the water pump.

I had mine quit on me a few times when my battery was low.

Car over heated and wouldn't move at all.

took some trial and error but with a BT cable, i got it running again.

29K miles, when mine suddenly overheated and developed a death rattle for the waterpump.

In the OP's case it sounds more like the thermostat failed.

same thing with mine at 63k miles. thank god i have warranty or it would've costed me an arm and a leg. there are two other members on the forums who had theirs failed at around the 63k mark as well.

You took the whole front end out for the water pump? Did you install it yourself? Just curious because when we did my water pump and thermostat, all we had to take out was the intercooler.

you really removed the front end for the water pump/tstat? takes me less than an hour even with bleeding to do one...thats pretty stupid if your a tech and actually removed the whole front end for that...and id hate to see what the customer paid for that haha!

the car had some other issues with the radiator supports missing so i had to fabricate something to hold it up properly.

also the way the worm clamps were positioned on the pump and stat would have made it very hard to remove from the bottom. everything went together better this way.

I can't believe they put a plastic impeller on the coolant pump!

This was a major problem in VW/AUDI 4-banger engines. The plastic impeller cracks and the shaft keeps spinning without any coolant being circulated. The problem was so widespread and so big that VW/AUDI issued a revised coolant pump with metal impeller.

Fortunately for us, the coolant pump is electrical and it is not driven by the timing belt, like it is in most engines. In the VW/AUDI 4-bangers, a crappy plastic coolant pump was the primary reason for premature timing belt failure and often head damage..

BMW water pumps have had plastic impellers for quite some time, Late model E36 and all E46 had them along with other bits of plastic in the cooling system. Great if your a parts house!

Mine took a crap on me two weeks ago...I think they changed over the t-stat also as its all plastic also.

They are not fun to replace, but normally you just do them from the bottom and you don't need 8 hrs, 3hrs with decent mechanical skills would be a better estimate.

Have you done this job before or have any tips you could offer?

I just scanned the car and got code 2E82 - Pump over current.

I'm guessing this is likely certain death? anything I could do to make sure before buying a $480 part

Any tips for the install? I like this route, with the intercooler removed there is tons of space I just never paid attention to the water pump area.

Mine just took a shit, with approximately 89K miles on the odo. Got the aftermarket aluminum thermostat to go along with the new pump on www.oembimmerparts.com. The car is at my boy's indy shop right now, and they will replace it tomorrow.

Symptoms were loud noise under the hood coupled with the fan on louder than it's ever been. Next sky rocketting oil temps. Pulled over with two codes: 2E81 & 2E82, I think. Water pump not hitting targets (forgot the exact term), and water pump shut down.
