I'm a little confused on what a "short engine" means ?
Hi,
From my understanding, a short block engine means the engine without the cylinder head and above parts. But when I look at realoem, I see a picture of the whole engine referred to as a "short engine" (not "short block engine"). http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...30&hg=11&fg=05 So for $3700 for a "remanufactured short engine" at Tischer do you get the whole engine top to bottom or only the engine without the cylinder head ? Just asking...for comfort |

There is no way the long block is 3700 bucks, I'm sure it's a stripped down short block. Full engine assembly is over 15k.

whatever you do it will cost you 10K-15K to rebuild.

BMW is a little inconsistent with that term. "Short Engine" usually means a bare longblock in the ETK.

I must be missing something because that link shows me $10K and $18K and Tisher shows me $9K. O well I wish/hope it is only $3700 if I did have a out of warranty issue :-P

And I do believe it's the bare long block which is very nice. Bmw very rarely uses different pictures than the real part. |

Hmmm thats odd, I just did a model search and clicked on engine and it doesnt even have that as a option. Thats good news if something did go seriusly wrong after warranty.

short block typically means anything below the head. but again, wording here is critical. For 3700 I am doubting you'll have more than you think.

sheesh lol
BMW's definition of a short engine/block is a engine block with fitted pistons. no rods/crank or any of that jazz. a block, 4/6/8/10/12 pistons, rings, pins and clips. |

This is definitely not plausible. Because a "new" (not-remanufactured) short engine costs $15000 at Tischer. There is no way only a block and pistons would cost this much, even new.

By the way, here is the answer from Tischer BMW: "Hi Catalin, BMWs terminology is a little misleading when it comes to engines. They refer to them as a short engine - but they are actually the complete engines. 11000415044 is a complete remanufactured engine." So...good news...knock on wood though ! |

If one has the right tools and equipment, and can do the engine swap themselves, this doesn't seem that much of a financial hit. Obviously if you want to get the head ported/polished and get everything matched, mated balanced would be a bit more, but if I were to burn a ringland or spin a crank bearing, $4000 is a pretty low price to pay to get a "new" engine.

ok to make this even more basic:
the rest of the world in laymens terms calls a short block a complete bottom end, minus sheetmetal and heads. in BMW terms, its a block with fitted pistons. a long block in the rest of the world in laymens terms is a complete bottom end with heads, minus sheetmetal. in BMW terms, it is a complete engine with sheetmetal, spark plugs, minus accessories (alternator, power steering pump, exhaust, intake etc.etc.) now, does THAT make sense? |

What doesn't make sense is that they sell a block and 6 pistons/rings as a 'shortblock'.
However, with the email above, 11000415044 appears as if it is a Complete engine...which I interpret as: Block Crank/bearings oil pan piston/rings connecting rods heads/cams/valves valve cover probably no fuel items or ignition items. maybe HPFP. definitely no A/C, power steering, or any other accessory. However, $4000 for all that seems too good to be true. |
