New Volvo S60, 11.8 psi Stock?

Please explain to me why the N54's boost is so conservative stock? A freaking Volvo is almost at 12psi stock and is also 3.0L.

May be a stupid question, but I had to ask...

The amount of pressure doesn't tell the whole story. It also matters what is the volume of air displaced by the turbines. Maybe the Volvo only has 1 turbo the size of one N54 turbo...

sure thats where they came out with "overboost" for the IS, Where they could make more money they will.

Plus they wont ever step anywhere near the 400hp territory with entry level 3's unless the M3 has 500hp.

Boost doesnt tell the whole story.

It makes no difference what PSI BMW uses, as both cares made 300 HP.

Making the most HP with less boost is always the best approach anyway.

Not to mention its an entirely different turbo setup and compression. Probably bore and stroke too.

It has to run more boost because it's compression ratio is only 9.3:1.

They probably did that so they wouldn't have much to worry about if someone dumps in 87 octane.

The BMW is completely designed around 91+.

Boost means nothing if you don't know the specifics of the turbo. 12psi out of a gt42r is a lot different then 12psi from a gt35r.

Exactly. All a turbo does is use the exhaust to drive a turbine that blows air into the engine. Boost is just a measurement in PSI, or pounds per square inch, of the pressure that builds up in the intake tract after the turbo. Comparing different engines with different turbos on PSI alone tells you nothing about the engines. All it tells you is how much pressure is in the intake tract at full song. Without knowing what these engine each make naturally aspirated and the relative sizing and efficiency ranges of the turbos that they are running, its hard to make any useful comparisons.

Does not matter.....my S60r ran at 15 psi, but it was not nearly as fast as a stock 335

even if your daily driving habits consist of rolling around in supercars, to say the 335i isn't a quick car is silly.

Not to get into semantics, but FAST and QUICK are two totally different things. The 335 is QUICK, but it is NOT FAST.

i am aware, but we both know you were talking acceleration, not top speed, when critiquing the 335i.

well, my dream car for the longest time was an S60R. They are great cars, but they are also heavy and have a crappy AWD system (haldex). I have been an avid Volvo lover and probably have one of the nicest S60 T5 in the states, but Volvo can't come close to the driving and tuning capabilities of the 3 series, no matter what numbers are given.

i was looking into the s60r for a long time too

couldn't find any that didn't have extremely high mileage or weren't obviously tuned (and probably beat to hell)
