Dension 500 w/USB Harddisk

I've been using a USB thumb drive with my Dension 500 for awhile now and it works great, but I'm running out of space on the 8G stick so I'm looking to USB harddrives but I'm having issues with them. I've tried three now (a 40G EIDE, 120G EIDE, and a 260G SATA) and I always get issues with skipping and lags and even dropouts of the whole MOST bus (apparently while the drive is re-indexing or something) I use the Gateway Indexer from Dension's site to index the drives before plugging them in, but I still get issues.

Is anyone using one with a real USB harddrive and if so, what size and type, and how is it formatted, etc.?

Thanks.

Hi Gene,

First of all Merry Christmas to you and all members in this excellent forum.
New User from Italy, I own a 330d Coupè 2007 and trying to get a dension 500 installed in my car.

In our European forum I read that this kind of problem may be caused by the Voltage on the usb connector, not enough to run the device connected to it.
Dension sells an extra cable that gives the proper voltage to the usb port and solves the problem.

Even if It's Christmas, later I'll post the link.
What type of Dension Gateway You installed? GW51MO2 or GW51Mbe?

That's my car setup.

Thanks! That sounds like a definite possibility I hadn't considered. My drive enclosure has a socket and switch for external power or USB power. Maybe I'll try it with external power and see how it does.
