thanks to wife backing up into a boulder. Scraped right down to the black, with some shards of plastic;looks nasty (car is silver), about 7-8 across middle of bumper, together with some minor scratches...am I looking at a new bumper or can it be repaired? How much is a new bumper vs. a repair??

Im sure it can be repaired........My wife did something similar.....she decided she wanted to take the "nicer" of our cars out one night even though she drives an E55 AMG, and as she was backing out of our garage she didn't see our range rover sport parked in back of her and backed our E90 right into it and made a pretty nasty dent in the rear bumper......We got it fixed.......
Any ways yah, depending on how bad the back bumper is, you could get it fixed.......
