A Guessing Game

I have just got my car back from Synter Chigwell as the washer jets were blocked.

How much did they charge me to fix

I’m not going to be a spoiled sport and end the guessing game, but in all fairness the work carried out included taking the wheel off, taking the wheel arch out, removing the washer bottle, cleaning it out, replacing the filter, cleaning through the pipes, putting everything together again and filling up the bottle again.

I'd say £150 all in, hours labour plus parts and VAT.

I was asked to OK £140+vat for an hours 'investigation' the other day so assuming it took them the whole hour I'm going with that figures. I told them to stick it and drove away to find a dodgy back-street garage at some point. Luckily they filled up the washer bottle (that keeps emptying) and it passed the MOT; think it was empty again by the time they completed the certificate - quite grateful they passed it actually.

Could have been a warranty job but it's only really eligible within the first 3 years; it's very dubious on older cars apparently.

There is no way this job takes an hour in a warm workshop. I did it on my driveway with a trolley jack in much less time than that.

The cost was £85 all in, I wasn't filled with joy, but any time you come away from a main dealer and you get charged less than a £100 you cant be too dissatisfied.

The thing that does surprise me is that this has already been done to the car about a year ago by the same dealer. Clearly the fact it has got blocked again is not their fault, but should I expect to have to get this done every year?

Anneka, you can tell your colleagues that the service (regardless of the price which I am comfortable with) has been nothing short of first class*

Next time it gets blocked up try this...

take off the plastic cover under the bonnet that covers the jets and pipes leading to the jets....remove the flexi pipe that connects to the jet and connect an air compressor to it and blast it with some high pressured air...leave the lid off the bottle at this point and watch all the water and crap come out of the bottle.

Then just re connect everything and fill up and your off

I did the same, cost me a tenner at local garage
