Returning it remapped
I am sure this has been covered some time ago but I cant find anything on the search.
If you sold your car back to the dealers for part ex and you failed to tell them about a remap would there be a problem? or do the dealers update every car they sell as a matter of caution? Cheers. |

I'm sure they'd just update it anyway with the latest software.

I have no idea what the real answer is but I'm inclined to agree with the above.
I reckon at most they will run a "reset" on the iDrive/customisable settings (paired phones etc) but nothing else. I doubt they'll do an update for the sake of it/as part of the service when selling a car back into the AUC scheme... |

Having had an AUC car, I can confirm that the $tealer will do absolutely nothing other than cleaning the car, unless you pick up on something. Oh, and they will MOT the car too (even if it doesn't need it). Ah, I remember, they managed to screw that up too by misquoting the VIN number - picked up by the DVLA though!
Any work that needs doing won't get done until you buy (or agree to buy) the car, that way, most of it will be done and paid for by the BMW warranty, rather then the $tealership. Cynical? Oh Yes. Been there, had that? Oh Yes. Mike |

When I picked my car up from the dealer it still had the previous owners contacts stored in the idrive, that's how much attention they give a trade in, it was spotless so that's where they spend the time.

Where does the new owner stand if they need to claim on their warranty and its denied to the remap?

Also, what if you sell it back (with remap intact) and someone else buys the car...insures it (without declaring the map, because they have no idea it has one). They then bin it (for whatever reason) and rack up a nice big bill. Insurance company investigates, discovers remap and declares the policy void. I dread to think what would happen in that scenario. New owner (now faced with a big bill) decides to go legal with BMW (they sold him the car with the map on it), BMW take no liability, they bought the car in good faith. They go legal with you.... Ok, it sounds far fetched...but crazier things have happened. |

They are 100% responsible for every aspect of the car / product they sell. No excuses. Even a completely hidden defect or problem that no one could have foreseen, they are still responsible for it because they sold it. They may choose to pursue you (the seller) separately, but they can't pass the buck on that one. But they would probably try to say that you (the used buyer) had put the Remap on it after you bought it.... Last edited by doughboy; 01-09-2011 at 02:59 PM.. |

I contacted my local Skoda dealer in 2004 to get a price for my remapped 1.8T Octavia vRS. I told them it was mapped and they declined to buy it or even offer a price for it.
We then traded the same car with Lancaster Audi for my wife's A3. I told them it was mapped and they didn't care. 2 weeks later I had a call from the Skoda dealer, referred to in para 1, saying they had bought my car at auction and wondered if I could tell them what the small potentiometer knob on the dash was. I loved telling them it was the boost controller for the remap ![]() Steve |

After all they are supposedly the qualified experts in the area of car sales, trading and engineering and so I would agree with the rest you state. Once they sell it on, the seller is in no way liable for the consequences. The small print T&C always contain caveats about trading in a VCAR registered repair etc, but not seen anything about software. As for proving when the map was on there, I would have though a time stamp might be in evidence? Raises interesting points regarding insurance. In severe incidents ECUs do indeed get interrogated by companies employed by the Police.

Wonder if that's ever happened? Insurance companies will do anything to wriggle out a of claim. A (unknown to the new owner) remapped car would be high on their list I suspect. As well as any other reason they could find. |

Although its a possibilty, I can't imagine this has ever happened.
Although people always use it as a horror story to demonstrate why you must declare your mods, actual examples of insurance companies not paying out because of a remap are virtually non-existant. I probably know of 10 people that have made total loss claims in the last 5 years with undeclared remapped cars and its never been an issue. In reality, in the event of a total loss, its pretty much only the bodywork/interior that gets inspected. A bodyshop sends photos to the insurance co. and they agree its a total loss and send a cheque. It could probably have a different engine in and they wouldn't notice. |
