Sad but true

You are correct, my 335i coupe did not come with an alarm as standard equipment. Hey! What did you expect for $48k!

I think it cost me about $400 or so for the dealer to install.

I'm so confused on this issue. Why is it so surprising? Are people considering a panic button the same as an alarm?

buy it for $250 and install it yourself. yea it sucks but at least they come pre-wired so there's no use in fussing about it

alarm to me means: When I lock the car via remote and someone tried to open it/break in an alarm goes off.... I cant F@#$ing believe it's not standard on a bmw.....400 bucks extra? Also do the dealer install those cheezy VIPER alarms or the likes? Or is it an authentic bmw alarm with that nice audible chirp when lock via remote.

no accesories are available. According to my BMW rep they want to allow the dealerships to have accesories to sell to make money.

No they install a factory alarm, its BMW part number 65 12 0 403 658 you can get it for about $250 online...try circle bmw.

You can also install it yourself, its pretty easy there is a few DYI pages posted here on how to do it - its all just plug and play you dont have to modify any wires or anything.

What i dont get is - what does the alarm really buy you other then the little chirp when you set the alarm - and of course the alarm going off if somebody breaks in. But that happens a million times a day here in socal and we all just ignore it...

Oh and the bmw alarm has no motion sensor - so it will only go off if you open the door or hood.

That's not true. OEM alarm has a motion sensor, it will go off if you leave the windows open and stick your hand in the cabin. It also has a tilt sensor that will go off if someone tries to tow the car or jack it to get the rims.

the dealer can program the car so it "chirps" upon locking and unlocking even without an alarm.

Up surd?

Anyway, the alarm will only, maybe, possibly deter someone breaking a window and grabbing your ipod. Unless you're worried about your pride and joy being trucked away on the back of a flatbed, there's no other way to steal the car.

My E36 got towed once, it had an alarm and it was going off- I doubt anyone cared.

Car alarms are notoriously defeatable to any thief worth thier salt. I can see how it's an "option" to keep the base sale price low.

Is this true? On my E90 335 w/o iDrive, I cannot set an audible chirp on lock/unlock through the onboard computer.

those menu options are available after dealer updates car software.
I don't know if you can get such software upgrade without having an alarm.

Even if you don't have one in the home bookshelf, the dictionary is available now on the Internet. Take a peek sometime.

Ledzep, sorry to nitpick, but this is really bugging me. Your sig should read, "The beatings will continue until morale improves!"
