Got Cobb, Having Technical Difficulties (Updated with answer)
EDIT: Well Rob called me and there is no issue. With a very new ROM the process can take an hour for AP to memorize ECU. Also after long dumps the radio buttons may stop working but will reset themselves after some time and a few key cycles. Rob called me on a Saturday while with family to ease my mind, great customer service
![]() Well guys i got my accessport and went to install it today. Well my ROM wasnt supported, something i thought might happen. So i followed the instructions and started to download the ecu information to the accessport. Well from the instructions i thought this would be a 5-10 minute ordeal, needless to say it wasnt. So why am i having problems? Well the first time i started i thought something was messed up, i had gotten to about 35% and it had taken a good 30 minutes. So i tried to cancel the operation because i was worried about the battery. Well cancelled it and car started right up. Drove it around for about 30 min to recharge the battery and double checked that i was doing the ecu memorization correctly (the information in the directions was slightly different than what my accessport was telling me which added to the confusion). PROBLEM: My radio buttons have all stopped working. All the functions of the radio itself still work, and i can use the steering wheel controls to control it, but nothing on the radio works except pushing the volume on/off. But the volume knob, all buttons including eject for cd, ect do nothing at the moment. This is the base stereo non I-drive. So after driving it around i determined i had to get the ROM so i could send it to Cobb. Well i started the process again. It literally took an hour. I couldnt shut the halos off so i was sitting in the car while it uploaded from the ecu to the accessport. Well at least now i have something to send to cobb. Anyone have any ideas about the radio. (FWIW, everything else in the car seems to be working normally from the lights, to the climate control, to the dash, but maybe there is something else i havent noticed yet.) At this point im not frustrated or angry, I have all confidence this will get worked out. I am also not bashing Cobb or the accessport, im still glad i got it just thought my experience could shed some light for others or help someone from making my mistake.

Have you tried unbolting the negative terminal of the battery to disconnect it and then reconnect it?

I did notice during the flashing you get several dash warning lights and I think the radio blinked off and on a couple of times. I had the same problem with the unsupported ecu, but the upload took maybe 10 mins.
A couple days later Rob sent me the updated flash which took something like 15-20 mins to download. When it was done the SES light came on, but then went away after a half hour of driving ![]() Although Cobb is the expert on these things, it does appear that the flashing affects a number of functions in the ecu, most of which return to normal after the flashing is completed. However, I would suggest you communicate with Rob by email - he's been very responsive. Last edited by SennaZ; 01-15-2011 at 09:50 AM.. |

This is why it all is a little weird. Mine really took an hour compared to your 10 minutes.

I had the same thing. It took over an hour to download the ROM on my unsupported ECU. Rob contacted me and let me know that it was corrupted, had me update the AP and retry. Took about 10 mins to do the ROM dump this time, sent it off to Rob and he made it first priority to work on. So you may want to try updating your AP and retrying. This was late last night for me.

downloading
From Rob to me for updating Accessport manager 2.0 and instructions on how to do it.
Here you go : 1. Download and install AccessPORT Manager 2.0 from the page linked to on your PC or Mac. 2. Start up AP Manager. 3. Connect your AP to the computer via the provided USB cable. 4. Click on the "Options" button. 5. Make sure "Check for beta firmware" is checked. 6. Click on the "Updates" button. 7. Click the "Check for firmware update" button. At this point the firmware will be downloaded, then used to update your AP. Once finished please follow these instructions: 1. Click on the "Options" button. 2. Uncheck "Check for beta firmware". 3. Close APM and you are good to install the AP on your 335i. ![]() |

update it first, then go out to your car and upload dump file for your 335,
Then send the file to Rob, He will make it so the AccessPort recognizes your car. He will just add support for your particular vehicle. Derek Last edited by Derek B; 01-15-2011 at 11:46 AM.. |

Can it be possible to brick the ECU in the car and corrupt it to the point where you would need to purchase a new ECU from the dealer? Just wondering in the future if I do ever go this route...

The cobb has an ECU recovery system built in it. If it freezes it will automatically start where it left off. I think it would be pretty hard to Brick the ECU. I have flashed the Mazda at least 100 times. But we are talking about two totally different ECU's.
I think of a cars ECU like a hard drive, I think if it were to get corrupt you could just reflash it.... This is just speculation... I not an ECU Technician. The guys at Cobb would surely know. Last edited by Derek B; 01-15-2011 at 12:03 PM.. |
