Replace fly wheel or resurface
Ok guys so i decided im going to go with an act organic clutch setup. Which i got for $450. Im just not sure if i should go ahead and replace my fly wheel or not. Should I resurface, replace oem or go lw fly. Everyone has been giving me different info on the matter. Thanks

just keep in mind, the lighter you go the more chatter you get, typically anyway.

"Try" to resurface first, trust me...just ask around a few tranny shops in your area if they can resurface a DMF and they'll tell you if they can do it or not...shouldn't be more than $100...you'll see a lot of people will say that they can't be resurfaced or that you shouldn't but almost all of them never had a DMF resurfaced and installed...if you google the topic you'll realize that all the people who got it done never had issues while those that didn't are speculating that it can't/shouldn't be done
i resurfaced mine with my ACT and works like a charm.. |

You like the ACT? I had a ACT stage 2 in my Z and blew it in a year! Clutch sucked balls big time, but I ran it hard!

16lbs for the CM one or 14lbs for the SPEC one vs ~36-38lbs OEM, its a lot The entire clutch masters kit with the lwfw clutch disk and pressure plate weigh as much as just the OEM DMF

i actually had a ClutchMasters FX400 6puck ceramic with their 16lb lwfw originally which replaced my OEM...it failed most likely due to a bad pilot bearing (wasn't concluded to be the cause 100% though but very likely)...CM's customer service was great and they sent me a brand new kit under warranty but in the meantime while I was waiting on it I got an amazing deal on the ACT street clutch and had that put in (didn't know what'd happen with CM and warranty)... With RB turbos in we'll see how far the ACT holds up but I suspect it won't be too long before I see it slip..we'll see |

if the shop has done an N54 clutch before/recently and they're not sloppy it shouldn't take more than 3.5 hours, 4 max to replace...its VERY straightforward...when you do it make sure to replace the throwout bearing and fork (which you get with most kits) AS WELL AS the pilot bearing (around $20-$30 OEM part)... |

Yeah I was just about to say isn't the lightweight one less than half of the weight of the OEM one?

I wouldn't do a lwfw if you go act street (organic)...as for vendors I got mine through STETTPerformance and I highly recommend them, great vendor!

It might be hard to sell an unused DMF and get the money you put in back...you'd end up losing quite a bit I think..i wouldn't do it at all, its too expensive to play around like that...take your DMF to the resurfacing shop and show it to them and see how well they think they can do it...its a risk for sure but given everything I read online and my own experience personally I wouldn't have a problem doing this again if required on another bmw

You should get a throwout bearing and fork from either ACT or CM but, most likely, you won't get a pilot bearing...i didn't get it with either the ACT or ClutchMasters...as far as bolts are concerned I'd go to the dealer and tell them you'll need replacement tranny housing bolts, not sure how many of them there are but I think there were definitely more than 4 (more like 8)...they're long aluminum bolts...you "could" reuse your existing bolts but bmw highly recommends replacing those as they're aluminum and I also recommend you replace them, not expensive...
if you're replacing the flywheel, which it doesn't sound like you will be, new flywheel bolts would be nice but those are much stronger (steel 10.9 grade I think) and should be reusable but i replaced those as well when I did my lwfw... |
