Finally "Custom Gears" and LSD for our 335!!!

After much searching for a Master Differential and gear expert, Success.
I found Ben from PuddyModRacing in one of the Miata-spec race forums. Ben is a Master Machinist who builds Diff for race cars, so naturaly I started with my little racer. I wanted to change the FGR on my Turbocharged miata from 4.1 to 3.63, The problem is that no gear this size is made for my car, so Ben specialy machined the pieces to accomodate the new gear, and I must say he did a superb job; No shims, no chrush collar, everthing in machined and blueprinted to perfection. He also Cryo-treats all parts for massive strength.
Painless just ship diff ups to him get it back in a few days, mount and
Next my 335.

This is his info if interested

Kind of confused, there a couple LSD kits out there, I have one in my car. No offense to your guy but there are multiple ways to do that will probably just as good and no handmaking anything, which I am sure won't be cheap.

Hey boys, why some of you all think you are offending? Is all good.
We know that just about any gear guy can slap the bad boy in, that’s no brain surgery, (Even though many do fail.)
Now to fit gears not made for a specific car, and make it not only work but and survive the abuse of racing… that's a skill not so easy to find. Ben is that kind of pro, he did my racer, and he will do also my 335. That’s all, just wanted to share.
By the way Compared to the joe-gear Job, he is not as expensive as you think. So no worries, no offence taken.

Sunny here 72F , off to the track now

No one is offended? And I think it's great you are putting custom gear ratios in, that is awesome. But you have to look at it this way OP, you titled the thread "finally LSD for our 335i" and the way we look at it is there have been multiple solutions to put an LSD in for a good while now, that's all.

Can anything be done to put an LSD in a 330i as well? I have not seen anything for the 330i yet, only 335's.

Jason deleted my posts Sorry Jason if my posts came across commercial that was not my intention. I can not PM you as I do not have that privilege yet.

I'm not sure how to answer questions in this thread so I will be careful as best I can.

I'm not sure if OSGiken makes a LSD unit for the 330i You can call or email them to find out.

I would like to be a source of information to you guys and answer diff related questions if you have any. Please do not ask me to work on or give cost to having work done. I can answer tech questions and add my 2$ in on threads like everyone else

I know Ben as he is very active in the S2000 community. His attention to detail is some of the best I've seen and his work is fantastic. As a few people pointed out, there are already some decent options for having "ready to install" LSD's sent with core fees, etc, especially for Wavetrac.

He would be great for specialty work or for Floridian's (especially near Tampa) to have an LSD installed. If you have a welded diff and don't want to send yours off and wait who knows how long or pay $800-1000 in core charges he might be an option too. For example, if I wanted a Quaife and have a welded diff, as far as I know I have to buy a whole unit at the bargain price of what? $3,600 or so plus install? The LSD is around $1200-1300 by itself.

I have a question for you, what do you think of a 335i MT with a gear ratio of 3.08 which to a gear ratio of 3.46? Any benefits on DD, on the Track or 1\4 mile?

All I would want is a shorter 5th gear, 1:1 would be sweet.

Ok maybe a taller 1st gear would be nice too.

Is stuff like that even possible?

Depends on your mods, if you want have amongst the best times than the 3.08 FD is better. With a 3.46 you'll be seeing 126 MPH @ 7000RPM, but at 7000RPM the power will have fallen off quite significantly from where it was around 6000RPM.

With the 3.08 you are seeing 122 MPH @ 6000RPM and 132MPH @ 6500RPM in 4th gear, much better power band to finish the 1/4 mile than with the 3.46 gear.

Thank you for posting and answering that question. I don't know the BMW power band or what transmissions are interchangeable with each model.

A general rule is shorter FD gears will allow you to accelerate faster but you shift more often and lose top end speed. Longer FD gears will allow you to stay in a gear longer and have more top end speed.
You want to find a good balance of these two that will give you the most all round performance.
The car maker most times is good at making a choice that best fits their model but will most times stay on the conservative side trying to get the best fuel mileage.
Say if your car came with a 4.10 stock going to a 4.30 or 4.44 may be a better performing ratio but you may see a few MPG lose and have a higher cruising RPM. If you boosted your car you may want to go the other way and try a 3.90 or 3.73 depending on how much more horsepower you make above stock.

It is if you guys can play transmission swap like we can in the S2000. With the S2000 if you have an older AP1 (00 TO 03) you can install the AP2 (04 TO 09) transmission and have a shorter 1st to 4th and a taller 5th and 6th. You get the best of both worlds a faster acceleration off the line and a greater top end speed.

You would have to look into gear changes in your transmissions and what reduction gears each have then figure out what may or may not be plug n play interchangeable.

Thanks chumley

The welded ring gear freaked me out when I saw it, I can’t believe they do this stuff. As all you guys may know there are ways around it but it’s labor intensive to separate and machine the ring gear to be used on a performance differential LSD.

So what you are saying is if I increase my HP from 300hp to 450/500hp it is alright to go to a gear ratio from 3.08 to 3.46.

And did Rysandro calculate the gearing ratio right?

that is a great thing to have done, custom gearing is shiznit if you know what your doing and what you want.

I would love a taller 1st gear in my M3, its ridiculous how useless it is. If I could get it to hit around 55-60mph in 1st gear that would be amazing, the TQ is an issue, just no traction with the close gearing.

Of course all the gears would have to get reworked in that case.

ahh hell, time for a 6 speed swap w custom rear end......$$$
