Blacked out taillights! (No Lamin-x)

First off I want to thank Nick@jlevisw for getting me the Lamin-x.

The Lamin-x film didn't work for me. The wrinkles wouldn't go away. I used a hair dyer which worked getting rid of some bubbles but the wrinkles still wouldn't go away. I still had to do some cuts to the film so it could fit perfectly but I accidentally chipped a bit of my paint doing it. In the end the film was getting scratched by the squeegee causing me to get even more frustrated. It took me a couple of hours and in the end I just decided to take it off and throw it away. Wasn't satisfied at all with it. Oh well. Life goes on.

I called my local tint shop and they said they could do it.

I want to see some pics of a light taillight smoke on a jet black. I'm debating on doing it now that the lamin-x was unsuccessful.

mines came out decent, you just have to put a hairdryer on that sucker. I would advise against permanent tinting, just because your preference might change. my .02

Yeah that's what I got and I used the blow dyer but it still didn't work for me. Just made me get frustrated.

Well I did it on a particularly cold day, so the film might have hardened to the tails faster. Iono.. what % tints are you getting? you gonna murder out your car?

Haha I didn't use a blow dryer. My bad. I meant a hair dryer. Idk if I'm doing tint or the spray thing? Yeaah sorta. I don't want my taillights completely blacked out though.

even using tinting will still get you wrinkles. its just a natural process since you do need to stretch the material around the edges. Of course, the more professional the person is, the less wrinkles you will get.

The other option was the spray tint thing. You think that'll look good?

Trick to installing LaminX is to do it on a nice hot/sunny day, lay the film out in the sun for a while before install, and use spray bottle with water to spray down tail light before applying film (and constantly applying as you wrap the film around the lens), and also constantly spraying down the outside of the film as you use the squeegee to allow it to lubricate the film and eliminate any scratches.

I did my tails & fogs in LaminX light smoke, and the headlights in clear. There were some very tiny bubbles at the end that disappeared after about 2 weeks in the sun - now they are perfect. No wrinkles and no need for slicing the film.

Only thing I found is that I had to trim the film slightly around the perimeter of some of the lights - even though it is pre-cut to fit perfectly, as you pull & stretch the film around the contours to eliminate wrinkles - the film ends up slightly larger than the lens and hangs over the edges in places.

there are professional places that cut out the white part of the tail light section and it looks pretty sick. Don't tint it, Lamin-X is the best option because it's reversible

this, but when I put the hair-dryer on the edges it just softened up and shriveled around the edge so I didn't have to cut. there were bubbles for like 5 days but they disappeared and now they're immaculate.

Well I would use Lamin-X but I don't have another $70 sitting around....kind of expensive in my opinion.

Im thinking of doing the yellow lamin-x on my fogs, do you have to remove the fog lights to do it?? was it a pain in the ass????

No, you don't have to remove the fogs (or the headlights/taillights for that matter) - and actually, the fogs were the easiest to do. I did the fogs first to act as practice for the rest...

OP did you install dry?

It's much easier to use a soapy water solution to apply....you can move the vinyl around a bit when it's wet.

Get a spray bottle with a fine mist sprayer and mix about 10% soap and 90% water.

You can even use windex but I prefer soapy water.

Yes I did. I think what the problem was is that it's very cold down here. I still used the hair dryer to warm it up which made it a lot easier but it still didn't help. I think it would've been a lot easier if it was warmer though.
