Wastegate rattle dealer fix..
Fairly new to these forums, been lurking around a while and just sold my e46 M and got into a 335i. I have been on the M3Forums for a while under the same sn.
I just recently dropped the car off at the dealer for a wastegate actuator replacement under warranty.. (service was quoted at 2600). I only noticed the noise at cold starts when the car was revved and the rpms were dropping.. which seems to be exactly where its most prevalent. I just wanted to know how many people have had this actuator replacement with no noise reoccurring after the service. From what I have read its quite common for the noise to reoccur after the actuators have been replaced. |

Sounds like you are no longer under warranty. Is the dealer replacing the actuator along with a software fix? The default fix is to eliminate rattle but adds lag.

Lol.. yes the car is under warranty.
I was just curious how much the actual service was from BMW.. they have it listed as 22 hours of labor or some ludicrous amount. I agree though, for that much I would obviously just upgrade the turbos. Now back on topic |

I had the Wastegate rattle on mine as well. So I took it to the dealership and my SA said their standard practice for fixing the problem is to replace the entire Turbo System being it is one unit. So 4 days later, new Turbos, Wastegates, Piping, Software, etc. All under warranty at no charge. FTW! So if you're still under warranty it should all be covered man.

My car is a early 07 with 45,000 miles and I've had no rattle or any issues. Hopefully you won't have a problem after the repair.

I've heard that dealers do a software update and replace the wastegate actuators first. Then after testing, they determine if the turbos actually need to be replaced. What I'm wondering is how often they actually deem turbo replacement necessary?
Also, is there any potential damage being done from rattling wastegates?

My aftermarket warranty paid the dealer to replace my turbos for wastegate rattle. Total bill paid by aftermarket warranty: $4200.

Need to make an appointment for this as well. The rattle coming from the passenger side of the engine is crazy loud. Hoping for new turbos since my warranty has about a month left on it.

The newer actuators rod diameter have been increased. Dealership technicians' will change out both turbo units which includes the actuator arms. From my readings, rattle does not reoccurred on the newer turbos. I may be mistaken.

update: dropped car off yesterday at dealer to get new actuators.. they said there has been a couple of design changes since they came out and they keep them in stock. so supposively just getting new actuators , not new turbos. on realoem I don't see just the actuators. now my question is: when they do a software update such as 29.2 to fix the rattle, is that version specific to the turbos or are the software updates for the whole car? so would it be possible to ask them to revert to earlier version or would that undo all the other software updates like for the hpfp, etc? guess I'll just call them to find out.

The latest revision of the software does not have the 29.2 lag, so you don't have to worry about that. They will not revert to an older software version, and yes, even if that would have been possible it would undo the update for the hpfp etc.

now I'm waiting for dealer to call me back about a couple of questions I had concerning a noticeable lack of turbo boost lately.. I asked them if this could be from the actuators not seating correctly or if I have another leak somewhere.. they have replaced one of my vacuum tanks and hoses (front I believe) due to a CEL code. .I'm not getting that now, but there is a definitely sometime when it feels like the turbos just aren't kicking in. I've also asked them if they would replace the other vacuum line while they have everything torn apart, even if I had to pay for the vacuum line myselff. i haven't heard back from them.

I forgot to mention to them when I dropped the car off yesterday that it sometimes doesn't feel like the turbos kick in when accelerating. i was curious if the bad actuators somehow affected the boost if things weren't seating correctly. I also asked them if they would mind replacing the other vacuum hose while they are in there .. they recently replaced one of the vacuum tanks and hoses that had a leak and throwing codes.. I left them messages about this saying I would pay for the hose if they would just install it so I'd have 2 new hoses.

Just wondering if you guys tried the Mr. 5 fix yet? If its from the rear turbo it only takes a few minutes. I'ts a simple adjustment on the actuator linkage. My rattle was gone with no issues.
