PROcede, Chained To Laptops?

I just ordered a PROcede yesterday. I know I will need to connect to a computer to load updates, but can I get away with borrowing one of my friends laptops? I personally have no need to own a laptop and it's hard to justify the purchase for only one application. Is this doable or is there reasons other than firmware updates that make it a necessity?

I'd say if you are running a tune only and nothing else, you can get away with it. If you're heavily modded, probably not.

+1 if you are just tune plus some other light mods it's going to be mostly firmware.

Or you can do what I kinda did, I bought the Serial to USB then also bought a 10 ft USB extension cable, I use it so I can sit down in the drivers seat if I needed to. In your case if you have a garage maybe setup your desktop near the garage and wire it up! If I was in your situation I could only justify moving the desktop (As long as there isn't a mess of wires) for a simple firmware update here and there.

I'm going to go with some light mods for now (DCI, exhaust, and the PROcede).

Probably have to, seems a little ridiculous to pull up in my yard and string a USB out my office window.

I'd ask, who is running a piggy back with out a laptop? I tried and I couldnt. Plus I think a bt tool is essential,so theres two things you need it for..

Like someone stated get a netbook. I have a regular laptop too and it was way too bulky so I got a small netbook for like 249 from bb. I've found other uses for it too and it also fits great on the passenger seat of the 335.

I have a Macbook, I guess I'll have to get a netbook if I decide to get a Procede.

Got any suggestions for a good windows emulator? I heard of that before, I've just never used it before.

I use VMware Fusion. Havn't had any issues.

I use wine on linux so I don't even need windows and it's free
You should be able to use it on MacOS as well but it does require a bit of nerd skills to set it up.

Park your car next to the window into your house nearest the computer (I assume you have one at home)... then run an extension cable from the procede to the computer. Done

If you have a Macbook, use it. You'll just need to load Windows and run it through Bootcamp. Of it you want both MacOS and Windows running at the same time for convenience, run it through Parallels. That's what I do and no issues whatsoever.

Or you can do what I (and others) have done for years and to get a used IBM Thinkpad for $100-150 off of Craigslist. They even have built in serial ports so you don't even need a serial/usb cable.

I am not sure what the minimum requirements are for the User Software, but I am sure this guy would work perfect for your needs and also you will not need to purchase a USB - Serial converter, as this has Serial native to the motherboard.

Yep.. that will work just fine. Cheaper than I thought! Makes sense since now you can get a fully modern, high-ish end laptop for under $500.

Cool, appreciate the response. I think I'll just break down and get an Acer netbook and the serial converter. Maybe I'll be able to find a second use for it down the road.
