Last bolts going in now, 3hrs15 mins., but we've got the DP fix to fit at the ECU yet.

On a ramp you can see the DPs from underneath with the tray on , piccy below from directly underneath.

When they're all filthy and heat coloured they'll be less bling I hope!

Looking good!!

Dam, I wish they were hidden and didn't look so bling. As you say hopefully they'll blend in better over time.

Not that I’m not thinking of declaring this mod to my ins co, can't wait to tell them. After all I’m sure they'll only want another £300'000.

Cheers guys.

They certainly sound great and have added a real edge to the acceleration and throttle reponse, less lag for sure a a new urgency to the engine.

The 2 less restrictive secondary cats are still in place further back (335i has 4 cats in 2 pairs) and they are sufficient to pass an mot.

On their own its not really about extra power IMO, its about the sound and the reduced lag and that the turbos become more efficient so they can reach the same boost pressure with less effort.

In turn you can turn up the boost more easily! but really you need an uprated intercooler to make the most from them...

Yes they will trigger emissions fault codes, that why you need one of these to plug into the ECU to stop the fault. (or a good remap will cancel out the faults for you)

How are you finding them?

Worth the wait? As you said you'll need the intercooler before you can get the best from the dp upgrade.

What are the main differances in sound? Louder, raspier, deeper? Is the throthle response greatly improved, almost no lag?

Intercooler soon?

Well, after a week and a bit with the DPs on, here are my views:

1. The NOISE.

This is the biggest factor for me on cold startup. The wife has said "is your car broken?". Its very metallic on fast idle, so much so it sounds like its rattling. TBH it sounds like a bit of a beast, but this jars with me a little at the moment. This soon settles down after 30 secs or so when the idle comes down. The tail pipe noise is a little deeper but not too much so.

When giving it some beans it sounds great, very much like a good N/A exhaust note, metallic in a similar way that an E46 M3 is.

At low revs / city speeds with windows open unfortunately (personal preference of course) you can really hear the turbos spooling up and down as you apply / remove gentle throttle, more so for me as I am used to driving round in 2nd or 3rd at about 2-2.5krpm which is right where boost picks up.

If you go to granny mode and keep below 2k when pottering you can't hear the spooling.

The unwanted low speed noise is an issue for me, i'll see how I get on with it. I like having the window open to hear the engine, so I'm not too happy that it sounds like a washing machine on spin! especially when passing parked cars or close objects etc.

2. Performance:

Throttle reponse is MUCH better and lag much reduced. There's a real urgency to the car. Don't know about outright power, but it feels a lot quicker and generally much more responsive. It does sound great when pressing on.

3. Other Issues:

When cold and on fast idle, the throttle response is very dull and causes misfires if you apply a stab of throttle, almost like there is TOO LITTLE back pressure to sustain the heavily retarded ignition used in that cold start phase (intended to warm the CATs quickly)

The car seems to do about 2mpg more on the same motorway runs which is nice. I've now averaged 30.7mpg over the last week.

AR have just released de-CAT downpipes with built in resonators to reduce the rasp and general noise!! Great - talk about bad timing. http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9805

If I'd known about the noise, I'd have wrapped and wired them in that fabric heatshield wrap to try and kill some of the noise (the sort of stuff they put on race cars pipes for heat shielding), This would also have the effect of heating the secondary CATs more quickly by preserving heat in the gasses through the downpipes.

We'll see....

Good you seem to like them (more or less). I can second the effect of better throttle response and much better revving to the rev limit.

I don't have your problem with dull throttle response when cold, or misfires (are you sure these are real misfires? error codes? I would wager these are not real misfires...).

Also, I don't mind the sound...mine is probably even louder due to the replacement of the secondary cats, and I LOVE it. To each his own, of course.

Stutters more like, no errors, but feels very much like either single misfires or partial firing, but this is only during the 30 seconds fast idle from cold.
