Bluefin or Evolve?

Hi Guys,
I've just traded in my 330i for an '07 530d (yes I know this is e90post,but the e60 forum is dead) and wanted to get recommendations on the above ecu tunes.

I'm in Sydney, so local support would be a plus. Looking forward to boosting that diesel bad boy to 200kW!

Hey boffman

I have got a 2006 530d with Bluefin. I went with bluefin at the end of the day because of the local support plus superchip is a larger tuning company. The guy i deal with was Peter James in New Zealand. He regularly travel to Australia to train dealership and do installation. Im not sure if he does installs anymore as there are dealership setup now.

Evolve is great too and has great response in the UK forum but they have no dealer in AU/NZ so I didn't go with them at the end. But if u really want the extra edge in the remap, some ppl said that apparently Evolve is still just that little bit better.

Both are good in my book so u cant go wrong. BTW, our cars smoked a bit more with remap but only when u punch it hard.

Give us some feedback after u do it. U will find that rear wheel spins quite regularly during corners if u push it...

ive been considering remapping our X5 3.0d as well..has anyone heard of dpchip?

http://www.dpchip.com/

It is an Oz owned business and claimed they are the only diesel chip company in Oz with a dedicated diesel tuning workshop, with 5 yrs warranty etc etc

I'm specifically after an ECU remap as opposed to a chip, which would just be changing the amount of fuel going into the engine (I think - happy to be corrected).

samchuang33 - thanks for the contact, I've sent Peter an email. If the wheels start misbehaving I might need an LSD next!

just had a quick browse of the DPChip website and they claim that they alter air fuel ratio as well as timing to achieve optimum power.

dpchip shows dyno sheets on their website.. kinda funny how they are all landcruisers etc with the peak hp/kw figure being around the 100kw mark lol.

I have used DPchip before I change it over to Bluefin for my X5. The DPchip was great as it allows u flexibility to turn power up or down depending how much u want to go. I had run DPChip for 2-3 yrs before I change over to Bluefin as nothing beats a proper remap where it adjust more than just pressure as most ppl suggest it does.

U just get better results with remap and bluefin/evolve switch give u the flexibilty to change from stock setting to remap in 5 min without opening ur bonnet. Accelerating is much more linear compare to piggy back boxes and u dont get that sudden surge when DPChip kicks in (sudden boost in pressure).

DPChip is great thou for the newer encript ECU for vehicle after 2009 as there is no OBDII remap boxes as yet since no one has crack the new tricore processors / encrypted ECU's. I think they are the only option now that allows u to change back to stock and not have to visit the tuners again.

They all have their pro and con i guess. I'm waiting for Superchip or Evolve to crack the new ecu so I can get either the bluefin/evolve switch and remap my 330d myself.

I am currently in discussions with Peter regarding a retune on my 320d.

30kw more power and an extra 110nm is pretty wild for a retune in my book - love it. (165kw & 455nm....) - these baby 4's already pull like a Thai hooker, so a remap will make them very sweet indeed!

Question: what do you mean it smoked.... you mean shitty black diesel soot when redlining??? I hope that is not applicable to the new cars.

The encrypted ecu's on the 2010 models is shitty in that we cannot get a Bluefin ourselves... we have to take it to a tuner and they remove the chip to retune. Process takes about 4hrs and costs $990.

But still, under a grand for all that extra pulling power - seriously considering this option - unless someone has a compelling argument not to (issues Im unaware of in remap tuning)....

The biggest issue with remaps is that you'll have to get it flashed everytime BMW decides to update your software.

True... thats the beauty of the standard Bluefin you keep the device forever and simply reflash yourself at home in around 30mins... the new encrypted ecu's req the tuner to come visit... or, u go to them - and they retune your chip.

Fixed price for subsequent retunes is $150.

Having the device yourself sounds awesome, pity you can't do it with the new encryptions.

Unfortunately I have no knowledge of diesel tuning, but if there is a piggyback solution available from Europe then that might be a cheap and easy way to go.

Smoke doesn't apply to newer cars with DPF as the filter will trap most of the smoke from exhaust. Doesnt mean that the car isn't smoking, it just means that u dont see the smoke. DPF should be able to cope with the remap so there shouldn't be any dramas. I think our DPF is the self regenertion type so it will just mean that it will regenerate more often if needed. Im tempted to do the $990 remap but will see how things go with cracking the new encription. Hopefully we be able to see bluefin/evolve switch for our cars soon as I love the ability to change around myself.

Most of the time the dealers will not wipe out ur remap during service. Only when they are updating an software will u ever encounter problems. I guess $150 isn't too bad anyway.

Dame... 165kw and 455nm is close to 330d output. It sounds so tempting....

Man, I have the same car and what you just said makes it so tempting. Keep us updated if you go through with it.

Keep us posted! let us how you go, I'm very tempted to do something similar. Does your E60 530d has the same engine spec as the E70 X5 3.0d? I believe both of our vehicles are fitted with M57TU2D30

When I purchased my vehicle, my salesman introduced me to the key employees (Service Manager, Body shop Manager etc) including the new Evolve Technik Manager. No problem with warranty as it is all done in-house!

I think Motorline are the only dealership that offeres this performance upgrade. So does it mean that they are covering the warrenty themselves?
