First MOT

So its first MOT time

15000 miles on clock

Is there any common things that will fail on from other experiences?

Related to this subject, do you get a letter telling you when your first MOT is due or is the onus on you to get it done on or before the 3 year anniversary of first registration?

Same here. The Dealer does a quick check in case there is anything that can get fixed under warranty before the MOT but I don't expect a 23,000 mile car to fail it, and it didn't.

OP - my last E90 330i sailed through at 55K no issues whatsoever.

Zenon - its strictly up to the owner - no reminder comes from the government, but some dealers will attempt to contact whoever they think is the owner, i still get reminders from Audi for an A3 I sold 5 years ago!

I wouldn't take it to a dealer for the MOT, they're just touting for business.

MOT has nothing to do with servicing or BMW issues, its just the MOT!

Just go to your local Kwik fit or wherever, cheaper and faster.

Unless it's still under BMW warranty of course!

If you send a vehicle for MOT _BEFORE_ the MOT is due (eg at 2 years 11 months or 11 months since the last MOT) and it fails the MOT - is it still legal to drive it?

Yeah and Kwik-Fit won't rape it for tyres and brakes!

Depends what it fails on if you think about it.

If the car is considered unroadworthy or dangerous, then obviously the MOT station has a legal and moral obligation not to pass the car and the owner has a legal and moral obligation not to drive the car until the defect(s) is repaired.

An advisory can be given to allow 28 days (I believe?) to correct a minor fault.

The S5 had its first MOT done by Audi as it was free and nothing found etc. so not always out to do us. They'd serviced it 10 months prior as part of the deal in me buying it so 'owt wrong with it I would have asked questions obviously.

My local BMW dealer charged me £40 - with no VAT just before Xmas. It passed, no problems. IMO, if it's still under warranty, at least they can do any remedial work whilst the car is there. Kwik Fit etc are OK if the car passes the MOT. If it fails, you will end up taking it somewhere else to be repaired and then back to Kwik Fit for a re-test.

Yes it does but does it not bong three years from manufacture as opposed to three years from registration?

Anyway, for your first MOT do you need to take any kind of paperwork? There's no previous MOT, obviously, so do you take the V5 or nothing at all?

well an MOT is in accordance with the age of the car in years, so manufacture would be correct!

Yikes!

Can somebody confirm please?? My car has a build date under the bonnet of Feb 2008 but it was in the showroom for a bit and I bought it "new" (i.e. ten miles on the clock) in April and its date of first registration is 27/4/08.

So when do I need an MOT? I assumed 27/4/11. If it's three years from manufacture how do I quantify the rather vague date of February 2008? What date of Feb??

It must be three years from date of first registration - how would the MOT people know when it was built?

Xenon - you don't need any paperwork. It'll be registered as MOT'd on the national database - I think they use reg and VIN numbers. A V5 could save a tiny bit of time I guess.

call BMW they will tell you.. thinking about it, it might actually be reg date, but that doesn't really make sense to me..

the only thing i have to go on was i know my car is a march '08 build, and my MOT was/is due on the 6th march this year

just call and ask, bottom line though, the bong is correct

First MOT...

I thought I'd be clever and get my first MOT on the 330d done locally, to save going to the dealer (180 mile round trip). I was very busy and could fit it in on the Wednesday, while already in town, two days before going away, with the 3-years up on the Sunday.

Get on the ramp and the guy beckons me into the bay, track rod end shot, at 34k miles.

So I'm put into panic... have to arrange to get to the dealer under warranty and get it fixed, tracking aligned and back again for the Friday, pre 10:00am, as we are off to Glasgow at 10:30am.

I have to bend the arm of my dealer, 180 miles and 6-hours used up on Thursday. Back to the local MOT station on Friday for a 'check' and certificate and away by 10:30am.

LESSON, don't assume a 3-year old BMW will pass the MOT, and skip using the dealer when there's potential warranty work to be done.

Last year went to the dealer and of course, "it passed", without issue. 180-miles and 6-hours wasted. Well almost... had a couple of test drives.
