Sunroof Exploded!

So my sunroof randomly exploded while driving in the city and it sounded like a loud gunshot. I'm very sure that there was no rocks that impacted the car, to cause the sunroof to explode as the glass has clearly exploded UP. I went to the dealership and they won't cover it under warranty. I spoke with the service manager, and he's discounting all my points which are:

1) Sunroof was closed
2) Glass exploded outwards
3) No evidence of rock impact on sunroof
4) Several cases of this happening on other vehicles
5) Glass made of tempered glass and we've had very dynamic weather recently with 20 degree (C) swings.

Can anyone offer me some advice?

Thanks,

Yea, I bet the shatter pattern looks identical to the previous ones too. If I remember correctly, it is pretty central but more towards the front of the car with a bit more at the front corners blown out.

This has happened a ton of times. It is a design flaw, and BMW needs to start owning up to it.

I agree about the search and maybe try a different dealer with some back up. When I've looked at people's pictures, they all looked like they broke in about the same pattern. Does yours look like other people's?

Was your shade mostly/partly closed? I had noticed a lot of people whose shattered had the shade partially closed and sometimes the sunroof vented.

Good luck, sorry to hear about this.

Known issue.

All instances had both the sun roof and moon roof closed. There has yet to be an instance of it occur with the sun roof open but moon roof closed, just like the OP said.

Call BMWNA and see if they will do something about it.

And for everyone else, drive with your sun roof open, I can't even stand having mine closed.

Coupe or sedan?

The sunroof glass exploding is a common problem in coupes and 2-dr hatches. It happens most frequently when all the windows are closed and then you roll down both front windows at the same time. Different cars behave differently. Unfortunately, this was a common problem in the 2-dr Golf MK4s and some MK5s.

It has to do with the pressure difference between the inside of the car and the outside of the car.

Some people have found a workaround: you open the rear window slightly to even the air pressure before you open your front windows.
